Dublin, Ireland—April 30, 2010—Apple® today announced that movies from major film studios including 20th Century Fox, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM), Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Universal Studios, The Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros. Entertainment, as well as European studios including E1 Entertainment, Lionsgate UK and Optimum Releasing are now available on the iTunes® Store in Ireland (www.itunes.ie ) for rent or purchase. The iTunes Store is offering top-rated movies including “Avatar,” “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” “Up,” “The Hangover,” “Iron Man” and “Harry Brown.”

iTunes’ legendary ease of use makes discovering and enjoying movies as simple and easy as buying music on iTunes has always been. Movies are available for purchase on iTunes the same day as their DVD release, and can be viewed on an iPod® with video, iPhone®, Mac® or PC or on a widescreen TV with Apple TV®.

With iTunes Movie Rentals, once a movie is rented, it starts downloading from the iTunes Store directly to iTunes or Apple TV, and users with a fast Internet connection can start viewing the movie in seconds. Customers have up to 30 days to start watching it, and once a movie has been started customers have 48 hours to finish it—or watch it multiple times.

Featuring Apple’s legendary ease of use, including pioneering features such as iTunes Movie Rentals, integrated podcasting support, the ability to turn previously purchased tracks into complete albums at a reduced price, and seamless integration with iPod and iPhone, the iTunes Store is the best way for Mac and PC users to legally discover, purchase and download music and video online.

Pricing & Availability
iTunes 9.1 for Mac and Windows includes the iTunes Store and is available as a free download from (www.itunes.ie ). iTunes movie purchases and rentals require a valid credit card with a billing address in Ireland. iTunes movies start at €7.99 for catalog title purchases, €9.99 for recent releases and €13.99 for new releases. iTunes Movie Rentals are €2.99 for library title rentals and €3.99 for new releases, and high definition versions are priced at just one euro more.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution with the Apple II, then reinvented the personal computer with the Macintosh. Apple continues to lead the industry with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system, and iLife, iWork and professional applications. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store, has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced its magical iPad which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices.

It’s about time, really! Now, give us TV shows and I can cancel my Usenet subscription.

Think we’re going to have to start calling you “Phelanizer” – you’re getting more scoops than Scoble these days!
I’ve been able to use Apple TV for a couple of years as my wife’s from the US and has a US credit card. It really is fantastic. I get around 6Mb down on my line at home and generally a movie, once rented or purchased is ready to watch in 30 seconds. Also, hacking Boxee onto the ATV is simple. This will make it a full blown media centre (Boxee is built on XBMC – XBox Media Centre software) – highly recommend as it will allow you to play most formats of movies whereas the ATV out of the box is locked to movies in iTunes only, so MP4 etc.

I’ve a mac mini lying around – finally have an excuse to hook it up to the tv (I’ve been using a PS3 to stream movies from an iMac to the telly). Here’s a great article on how to turn a mac mini into a media centre in case anyone else fancies it – http://hicksdesign.co.uk/journal/mac-mini-media-centre

Stewart, have a look at that Boxee app I mentioned above. Runs on the Mac too – http://www.boxee.tv, it is essentially media centre software, also remote control app available for your iPhone for it.

This is a very welcome development. However, it seems to me that iTunes movies really require a middlin fast Internet connection for this service to really be of any use at all. The standard average 2 or 3 Mbps which we have come to expect in Ireland is insufficient. We are supposed to be the techonlogy centre of Europe with EU Google HQ, Microsoft, Apple bla di bla but really our Internet infrastructure is crap. Korea can get 100 Mbps and we’re supposed to put up with 2 or 3? Wake up Ireland, we need better.
