Are Golden Spiders tracking The Irish Web awards nominees?

I got a very strange email from the team behind PR at The Golden Spiders today. I don’t want to embarrass anyone so will only post an excerpt.

“Due to demand, the deadline for the Eircom Golden Spider’s Awards has been extended until the 30th of September; this will be the absolute final deadline for submissions”

So I called them up and asked what category I was nominated in and they couldn’t tell me, all they could really tell me was that “a colleague had mentioned twiterfone” (which has just by chance made the short list for the Irish Web awards) and they wanted to make sure I didn’t miss my chance to nominate myself.

The person I spoke to asked me to nominate myself (WTF !!!!!) and pay €150 for the pleasure and I would hear from them.

Forget it guys, we are thrilled to be nominated for The Irish Web awards and will leave it at that.
Great poster by the way Ken

Well either a) they haven’t gotten enough entries or b) they have had a lot of people asking them to extend the deadline as they have something nomination worthy about to go live. Either way they shouldn’t really be asking people to go nominate.

And sure who else would nominate you seeing as it’s €150! I mean I think twitterfone is a great idea, but I’m not going to pay that much to put it into an awards ceremony!

That’s a bit rich, don’t you think? One of the reasons, I’m guessing, why the Irish Web Awards exists in the first place.

Cheers for the hat tip too :)

Well I’m pleased to say that my radar from Golden Spiders has been nice and quiet. Obviously last year’s little slap on the wrist has paid off – http://url.ie/qqk

If you’re sick of being contacted, just unsubscribe. If they ignore you, tell the Data Protection Commissioners and they might even be fined!

They’re probably not stuck for entrants, just clueless as to who to approach outside their regular circle. Likely the PR department is on decent commission for putting bums on seats as well. “Entry Fee” – yeah right.
