Bebo to shut down?

BeboLogo

Sources in the USA have been mentioning to me for the past few months that AOL have made a decision to shut down social networking site Bebo. Bebo which was purchased from Michael Birch and Balderton for an astonishing $850 million only 24 months ago.
The site which is still showing good traffic in Ireland has been a terrible purchase for AOL and now the rumors floating around say that for tax reasons it would be better for AOL just to hibernate the site rather than do a quick trade sale.
bebo ranks
Surely with its excellent ranking in certain countries it must be worth a “smaller fortune” to someone?
Maybe the Birch’s could step back in, I had a coffee with Michael’s brother Paul last year and he impressed me a lot, might the other Birch brother be the man to save Bebo?

Hmm … I always wonder about the business model of these sites …

And while ranked 14th in ireland is nice … the population of ireland is relatively small

Apart from OhNoes comment above, I never understand why huge companies spend so much on a buyout and then shut it down when its not returning right away. Who’s making their forecasts?

It’s a small market but it’s a market. 10 smaller markets are better than 1 large one that you can lose much faster. How will shutting it down make them better off?

    I think I just justified NAMA to myself… :/

What would shutting down bebo create? sure alot of people have turned to face book but millions around the world are still with bebo, bebo has history for people that have been with it a long time. Why would you shut down somthing thats bringing in alot of money? its like shutting down youtube! Its a stupid idea and more people socialize on bebo than what they do on freakon face book!!!!

No, don’t shut Bebo down. We need some healthy competition with social networking sites. I also use MySpace and Facebook, but popularity goes in waves and there could very well be a time when the masses will get tired of Facebook and go somewhere else.

Nothing is for everybody, not everyone likes to use Facebook.
