The stand alone brand powered by O2 Ireland and running on the same Quartet platform that Tesco Mobile runs on in Ireland has come out of the gate at an incredible speed.
Its offers are just incredible, €10 a month for membership which includes unlimited calls and SMS to any Irish mobile network plus you can add on 2GB for a month for €8 bringing “unlimited” for most users for €18 a month.

The SIM arrived in a couple of days with an 089 number as the mobile prefix, we ported it online with a very simple online page and were good to go in a few hours with a normal 087 prefix on it.
This is all any user including myself will need so I guess I’m good to go.
Couple of little points to beware of though.
Not every Payzone outlet we tried had 48 credit on it system.
They cannot take credit cards online yet.
The unlimited calls only include 20 minutes calls to fixed lines.

Other than that I think 48 “months” has a bright future ahead of it.
It will be interesting to see how Ireland’s other youth mobile brand responds.

At last a move in Europe for Mobile
Virgin France have taken the lead and launched a voice/data/sms plan.
The fully unlimited option, including calls, SMS, internet up to 500 MB, e-mail and Messenger. It costs EUR 89 per month with no contract or handset.
Although it seems all is not well according to Novelobs
Virgin is an MVNO and its supplier Orange Telecom have just announced they are not renewing their exclusivity contract with Virgin. Virgin has been trying to bid for a 4G license in France but apparently they are giving up because of their cash position. This move might bring them the necessary 250M € needed for the bid.
Hopefully with Virgin breaking the mold we are going to see more of this closer to home.

Hutchison Whampoa’s mobile operator 3 Group has announced an unlimited mobile internet service called the X-Series. Launching initially in the UK from December, the service will work like broadband, offering unlimited use of internet services for a flat fee. Users will get calls using Skype, be able to watch their home television via their mobile using Sling, access their home PC remotely using Orb and have access to messaging services from Yahoo!, Windows Live Messenger and Google. Users pay a flat monthly fee for access to the X-Series services on top of their normal monthly subscription, with an additional charge for higher-bandwidth services such as Sling and Orb. Three unveiled two handsets tied to the service, the Nokia N73 and the Sony Ericsson W950i.

In an unusual move 3 also appears to have put itself up for sale at the same time.

“Reports are circulating in London today that Hong Kong conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa has put its UK mobile phone business 3 UK up for sale. Goldman Sachs has been appointed adviser and an official announcement is expected to be made on Thursday.

Motorola unveiled it’s first Instantmoto on Thursday in downtown Chicago. The machines are about three times the size of a typical beverage vending machine.
The vending machine-like “Instantmoto” stores will sell 12 kinds of phones and 18 accessories.
The pilot program, which was announced Wednesday, may expand depending on how well it does.

“It provides convenience in a small footprint,” company spokesman John Wernecke said. “These little robotic machines are going to be the future of what’s to come in terms of Motorola’s convenience purchasing.”

Shoppers will be able to use credit cards to purchase mid- to high-end models, including the Razr and the Q, and can buy with or without a service plan for T-Mobile, Verizon and Cingular service. Using a touch-screen, customers can pick a phone’s style, color and accessories, such as car adapters and chargers.
Motorola says it is the first phone manufacturer to sell electronic gadgets using a vending machine. The stores are operated by San Francisco-based Zoom Systems.
