From Charlie Hurley to Roy Keane
I am going to be off-line this weekend and its all Charlie Hurley’s fault.
In 1957 Cork born Charlie Hurley arrived and begun my Dad’s obsession with Sunderland A.F.C. 51 years is a long time to support a football club and never get to see them.
So today that’s going to rectified, three generations of Phelan men make the pilgrimage from Cork to Sunderland.
My Dad grew up in poor times post war and his father died when he was a very young boy, times were tough and he went to work at 13, we have never had an amazing relationship and I cant never remember him treating himself once.
This weekend is my way of saying thanks Dad and hopefully a brand new start.

You’re as good a son as you are a friend.
If you wanted to treat someone I’d have thought Sunderland would be the last place you’d take them!
Your Father put you on the right track.Im 60 and saw my first Sunderland game in 65,against Sheffield United4-1 win Jim Baxter was amazing. Im an Arsenal fan ,and at the time we were rubbish.I thoughtHurley,Mcnab And Baxter were wonderful. Charley Hurley lives near me in Broxbourne and he was supurb player. My accountant is a Millwall fan and is still a fan of Charlie.I should have explained that I had an Aunt in Durham, which explains me being in the area.Impleased that you have Naill Quinn as your head ,as he was an honest forward for us,imsure he will lead Sunderland to success.
