Chris Mehigan left a comment today and we had a quick chat
“Sim card was activated and designated as “Speak Easy” which of course is wrong, Customer Care changed it to “Bill Pay” and asked me to power down and start my iPhone again. I was told that this would fix the issue with being unable to send text messages.
It fixed it. But it also fixed the data problem for me. I am now able to go online and have full use of the iPhone. Very happy with the result and passed my feedback on to O2″
I Called them up myself and they done the change and its working perfect now
Thanks Chris ![]()
Its appears that O2 registered batches of genuine bill pay customers as speakeasy yesterday and that’s the issue.
“IT IS A PROBLEM WITH YOUR ACCOUNT SETTINGS REGARDLESS OF WHATEVER THE 02 REP SAYS”
So if you have a problem with connecting on 3G or sending SMS follow the above steps and you will be fine
Again appalling behaviour from O2
Total FAIL

Good work Pat, the new iPhone still has yet to convince me to buy one, I think the way that Apple lock it down just does not appeal to me, as for O2 f**king it up, what else would you expect from Irish Telco’s.
I’m having a similar issue where GPS+3G don’t seem to work in my area, worked grand in the city centre though so I’m not sure what to make of it. I guess its worth calling O2 about anyway.
I just found this blog through google when I was searching for info on the no SMS / no 3G issue with my new iPhone. As above, a 2 minute call to 1909 solved the issue - the guy in o2 confirmed that a batch of numbers has not been set up correctly, i.e. they haven’t been set up with SMS or 3G.
Very happy to hear that worked for you Pat.
I hope other readers of your blog benefit from it also. I would be interested to know if you had to guide customer care through this as I did phone them yesterday to provide the feedback that it had fixed it. Wondering if they are taking my feedback on board.
It’s such a silly mistake to have caused such major headaches. Really no excuse for it. But on the brighter side it reassures me that my iPhone isn’t faulty and that the O2 network is working fine for me, so for those reasons I’m happy!
Nonetheless, a sloppy mistake by O2.
I just spoke with them on the phone and explained to them that there was this problem with the speak easy thingy. They said that was not the problem at it had to be something on apples end. :S Guess I dont get to play with my ihpone today either.
Still on the lovely PDP error.
@ricke
I can guarantee you that’s the problem.
we are in double figures for people sorting out their iPhone’s using this fix
give them another call and tell them to have a look at what was done to my account 086-8229222
Hi Pat, I was onto Customercare, I was told to enter the following
*5005*7672*+353868002000#
then press the call button, and got the message
“Seting SucceededService
Center Address
No Address”
Still no joy im afraid though. The girl I was talking to also checked your account and noted that all the same steps had been done to my account and by myself.
And im still getting that lovely PDP welcome message from safari.
Seemingly o2 are having DNS issues today as well, which isn’t helping matters.
here are screen grabs of what im experiencing.
PDP Error:

Im in an area with low 3g coverage, but safari should work with edge anyway, shouldnt it?
And message sending error:

which should technically have been fixed once I input the number above (which o2 CC said should fix it).
Great way to dampen a user experience. Its like being promised gold and given lead.
@shane
these are the EXACT problems all of us were having, ring them again jump up and down, tell them to recheck are you on speakeasy.
Ahhhh now I understand the problem. They are using a PDP-11 for authentication. They should probably upgrade to a PC-XT with 20MB harddrive.

Worst geek humour this week?
finally have a working iphone!
I rang them earlier after your post Pat, and I was told yet again that my account was billpay and that it was an apple issue. Just now I rang out of frustration and got onto the nicest woman who got onto the Tech dept and sorted my problem. for anyone else IT IS A PROBLEM WITH YOUR ACCOUNT SETTINGS REGARDLESS OF WHATEVER THE 02 CC REP SAYS.
And on another note their 3g network problems have literally just been fixed and if it goes down again they have tech’s at hand to get at it again.
Okay, just got in from work. It is nice to hear it worked for you lot. I’ll give it another go in the morning. I’ll ask them to check your number, pat, if they keep going on about it being an apple issue. Hopefully they keep notes of stuff like this on the account so they can see what has been done.
Wish me luck. I’ll post back and let you know if it worked or not.
Okay, stayed up till opening hours and the first call was the same deal. I think I said it 3 times to the guy. It is set up wrong, even gave him your number pat and he apparently could not see anything. He talked to the techies, the lot, clueless. Then he connected me to the broadband support for o2. Now that is a different matter, they seems to be fully aware. Had it reset for me and set up correctly in under a minute. And he confirmed that it was set up wrong.
So if anyone is still having this problem, do not ring the normal support go straight to broadband support.

Similar problem here with a friends iPhone. Not sure if it’s exactly the same though.
Just to clarify :
- for everyone else that used this solution, is it the case that both internet AND texts didn’t work? Texts work fine on this iPhone. Just net gets you the PDP error message.
- Was the 3G icon displayed on the phones before being ‘fixed’ ? 3G icon is displayed on this phone.
In anycase, called O2 this morning myself and told them to check and make sure the account was set up correctly. Was a very short conversation and I was told at the end that the account had now been reset and everything should work after I power down for 15minutes and try again. This didn’t solve anything.
Phoned them back an hour later and informed them. Was put on hold to connect to tech/broadband team but support guy came back on and told me the tech team wouldn’t talk to me because the account had already been reset and that’s all they can do. Support guy didn’t have any other help to offer but told me to call an Apple number.
Apple guy said this is all very confusing…. go and get the phone replaced!
Considering that’s going to be a ~2 week wait for new stock to come in, there’s time for trying something else if anyone has suggestions.
Does it sound like I’ve got the same problem as everyone else and o2 are just being incompetent? or do things sound slightly different here?
Sorry for the ramble. Muchos gracias for any replies
Update : Friend visited the o2 shop this evening. Store attendee tried the phone with another SIM (but only after being prompted to do so… genius) and the other SIM worked no problem.
So the problem is obviously *not* the phone, as o2 support previously said it was.
My friend then got a replacement SIM card — for his same account — waited three hours for it to activate and, still, got a PDP authentication failure.
At this stage it sounds all too similar to what you guys are saying — the fecking account is set up wrong.
Well I gave them your number in the end Pat and told them to check what had worked for you. This is the first Internet post on this iPhone.
Thanks
Hi Pat,
I’m glad I found your article. I phoned O2 and after going through a large number of O2 agents which denied the issue I finally found somebody at O2 which was open to listen and help. I provided your article’s URL to the agent and in less than 2 minutes the issue was solved.
The agent amended my account from “Speak Easy” to “Bill Pay” asked me to switch off/switch on the iPhone and test. Now the iPhone works perfectly with 3G(UMTS) and Edge(EGPRS).
I confirm that the issue is with O2 and setting up incorrectly the account for new iPhone 3G customers.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I purchased an iPhone yesterday and it had been provisioned incorrectly, finally got someone at O2 to keep trying to fix and they found a data tech that fixed it. I will add that O2 originally told me that there was no problem, that it was apple who needed to fix it, but since I had this blog post to refer to I continued to call them and press the issue. I had them check the settings on the account and finally… I now have SMS/Internet access, woohoo and did I mention thanks !
Needc help. My friend did something that locked up my I-phone 3G, I restored it to like new, but it gets hung up everytime it tries to download my music files from my computer. I can’t get more than one or two songs downloaded in the sync process before it hands up. I thought it might tbe the song, but I removed that song and it still got hung up on me. Any suggestions?
Just to let you guys know but this issue is still happening and I was only able to resolve it using the info on this blog post. So thanks for that.
o2 had actually deactivated my account because THEY incorrectly setup my direct debit details. They didn’t ring/email to say my account was being deactivated but instead left me without the use of my phone on the weekend that I was going abroad. I was livid with them.
And then when they reactivated my account, they set it up as speakeasy rather than pay monthly. What a bunch of muppets.
