If I was to buy an iPhone in Ireland
If I was to buy an iPhone in Ireland and didn’t want to get hit with the “Paddy Tax” here is what I might do.
I would pick up one from one of thousand sources especially Cork where there are going to be 1500 free iPhones given to Apple employee next week.
So imagine I have picked one up and I don’t want to be penalised every day I own it what might I do?
My first step would be to get it unlocked, I would head over to Ziphone and download the unlock application for free or I might also have a look at iClarified
So now I have an unlocked iPhone where would I go, possibly over to O2 for the following package.

Or I would probably have a look at Meteor with its unlimited Data packages for €30 and all my voice mails for free instead of 15c each plus free calls Saturday or free calls all weekend.
Maybe I would even head over to CODEX1 or Joe Lennon who both appear to have all the info on connecting the phone to Meteor.
Maybe that’s what I would do if I bought an iPhone.

That meteor data add on requires you to be on their €60 per month tariff, so it’s not such a great deal.
Yes Brad but you have free voicemail, free Saurday and Sunday calls.
free Meteor to Meteor calls and free Meteor to Meteor texts plus and more importantly the data is unlimited.
Buying shrink wrapped iPhones direct from an Apple store in the US is so much more of a better deal than buying a UK or IE sourced handset.
ZiPhone is now so good that anyone can manage to safely and quickly unlock (jailbreak and SIM-unlock) the iPhone in under 2 mins30secs.
One little game that ‘could’ be played is going around unlocking the demo phones in O2 and Apple stores….. not that I would do it myself of course - far to respectable for that!
Do Meteor block any ports on their data service? I’d love to be able to make full use of things like Putty for SSH, Jaiku mobile client, IM, etc. on my phone.
Thanks for the link Pat!
James: My 250mb data bundle with Meteor kicks in on the 9th March, when it has I’m going to test EDGE out so I’ll be checking whether or not they block ports (SSH, IRC, etc.) then.
Thanks Joe - I’ll definitely be interested to hear what you have to report back on port blocking.
If I were to buy an iphone, have it unblocked an put in ready to go sim for meteor, would it still function normally? Also the tarrif for sixty euro, would this be optional or is it necessary for the iphone to work? And what exactly does the data downloads cover? Thanks for your help.
Pat
Just saw you on the news on RTE 1 . Great piece and you even got the blog address on .
Well done
Ah yeah meteor is just the way to go isn’t it? I’m still gonna hold out for the 3G model of the iPhone since I have an iPod Touch. Sucks I have to pay for all the updates though.
This is a great idea……….but when you unlock your iphone does it get rid of the tariff charges so that you don’t have to pay the contract each month??? Also if you order your iphone from the U.S.A will the unlocking still work??? I’m confused!
Thanks!
