Intel head of mobility-”few people seem to want to use a mobile phone, even a smartphone, to get at all their online stuff”

This is probably one of THE most out of touch quotes I have ever heard from anyone in the mobile business.
“few people seem to want to use a mobile phone, even a smartphone, to get at all their online stuff”
Seriously Mr Chandrasekher, please have a look around at some numbers
10 million Iphones in 2008
Android expected to shift 5-8 million units in 2009 (I think it will be higher)
Palm Pre launches, will probably do 2-2.5 million units in next 12 months
So 30 million users disagree Mr Chandrasekher.

I can’t understand HOW someone in that position could come to that conclusion. Christ.

On the surface, I don’t agree either.

However, I’ll give the gentleman from Intel the benefit of the doubt.

I have a feeling he’s trying to say the smartphone Web surfing experience is a poor one and therefore it is difficult for people trying to access info on a smartphone, which gives netbooks a market opening of sorts.

Intel sold its ARM/Xscale mobile processors to Marvell a couple of years ago and x86 power consumption isn’t low enough for mobiles yet.

In fairness to Chandrasekher I think he’s trying to be positive about netbooks in the article,

That frustration, said Mr Chandrasekher, helped to explain the growing interest in so-called netbooks – small machines that do a good job of connecting to the web but, before now, have lacked the processing horsepower of their laptop and desktop brethren.

He must be raving. Try reading the 2007 Ovum report alone…
