Magic Jack

magic

Magic Jack looks like a winner and given the pedigree of its backroom team will make an incredibly interesting addition to an all ready bursting at the seams arena.
Paul wrote about this first and there appears to be a form of a mini Armageddon going on in his posts comments. Anyways the guys at Magic Jack have promised to get me over a Beta test unit asap, hopefully before VON,Below are the highlights.

What is my monthly rate?

Your service is good for one year upon initial activation of your magicJack™-$29-39 for the first year. After one year, you may renew service yearly for a low annual rate of $19.99 per year thereafter

Can I use my current telephone equipment with my MagicJack?

Yes, simply plug your current ordinary phone system into your magicJack™.

When can I purchase the magicJack™?

The magicJack™ will be commercially available in April ‘07.

Can I make international calls?

Sure. Call any person who has a magicJack™ in any country and the call is free. Or click here (available in April ‘07) for low rates to other countries.

I for one am looking forward to seeing Dan Borislow re-entering the telecoms arena.

It is very similar device I saw it, I use google to search, someone call flashphone and come from mplat.com , and almost one years before.

I guess, MagicJack don’t have core technology.

I bought one and it works great. The voice quality is excellent and the price is right. I just bought 3 more to give to family members. Kudos to Magic Jack!

Magic Jack is great.I am a sunburnt Sunrocket customer that was left out in the rain
    with no telephone service.
Magic Jack to the rescue. I ordered mine it came in 3 buisness days,i plugged it in registered and i am back in buisness.
Phone quality perfect, price amazing, this is a dream buy for all budget minded buyers.
I wonder what kind of impact this will have on other sky high priced phone companys.

It is a nice feeling “stickin it to the man”

I wonder how this works for us folks who live in Mexico. MagicJack is available for sale on the Mexican equivalent of e-bay–Mercado Libre @ http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.ar/MLA-28636247-magicjack-llamadas-a-usa-gratis-tene-tu-nro-en-usa-_JM

Would I have a Mexican telephone number and be able to call within Mexico for free as well as l-d calls to the US and Canada? Any information you folks may ahve would be appreciated.

    TIA

Marie, Does your statement mean that your SUnrocket number could be ported to magicjack successfully?

  6. Posted by Anonymous 3rd August, 2007 at 10:55 pm

    Kasireddi, hi there.
No I dont believe you can port a number just yet, yesterday they added 911 on the soft phone.
one of the cool features I like
is that you can pick up your regular phone and call or you can use the internet phone with a headset. So if you hear the phone ring you dont have to get up and you already know who is calling.

This phone company is getting off to a good start and I know in time the Magicjack will offer every feature avaliable.
you do have to have some type of highspeed internet(which is always on anyway)
however your computer can be on sleep mode and your phone will still work.
I also hearGOGGLE is putting out a free service to combine all your #s and voicemails
called GRAND CENTRAL-it is also in its infantry stage.

I bought a magicjack 1 month ago and use it everyday with absolutely no problems. It is great. I highly recommend it for all but specifically households that only use cell phones without a landline.

Glad to hear there’s a product out that can help the people without getting ripped off by the phone companies.

I have not purchase one yet, but i’m looking forward in doing so. Just waiting to see what feed back I get from our famous radio personality(Neel you know him 105 in Atlanta).

    See you soon!

I bought a magic jack and it came in the mail almost one week to the day I purchased it. Opened it and plugged it in. I can get a dial tone but can not call out. I am going to give it about a week and then if it does not work…I am going to send it back. Magic Jack sounds great but I am not a believer since I still can not make a phone call with it. Where is the Magic in that? Go to their forum http://forum.magicjack.com/forum/ read before you buy! Oh yeah, their server is down and has been all day long so no phone calls for me yet! Lastly, make sure you find out about what area codes they don’t have! http://www.magicjack.com/site/AreaCodes.html Good Luck

Can I use Magic Jack in Calgary, Canada? If so, do you know where I can purchase it?

If I need to purchase it in the US, where can I purchase it in San Francisco? or do I have to get it by ordering on line? Can it be sent to Canada without paying duty on it?

    Thanks for the info.

I am interested in Magic jack, but I was wondering how much does it cost to make Int’l calls. We have family in Ireland? Can you get a Magic Jack with an Irish telephone numeber? It would be great to be able to plug in here and call back for free. Is there a European verison of Magic Jack?

    Hi,

I work in Qatar now, where the international calls are very expensive!

May I use the Magic Jack to call in other countries, or where can I get this info? I cannot get any tel. number from the company to enquire.

    Thanks

For those people in Mexico, Canada and Overseas: I don’t have MagicJack, but have read about it. Apparently, when you sign up you are given a telephone number from a selection of US area codes. Not all metropolitan areas are available. If someone dials that telephone number, the phone attached to your MagicJack rings. Furthermore, you can call out on your phone to any phone number in the US or Canada. Therefore, you can be located anywhere in the world and receive calls as if you were in the US, and you can call out to the US or Canada.

WIII THESE S WORK IN THE UK SO FAR NO ONE HAS SAID THEY DO ????????

    Hello,

Can anybody get a free beta of “Magic Jack”? I looked at their website and I didn’t see any phone numbers listed nor any email links, except for a blogging section. SunRocket shortchanged me out of $25.00, which I imagine isn’t as bad as what some people lost. Is there any way of getting money that a person has coming out of them? Thank you.

  24. Posted by Thump 27th October, 2007 at 7:47 pm

I bought a Magic Jack to test and write a review but the review is turning into an expose. It does not work as advertised. It can call out using a number that’s not being used by anyone through some trick but it can not receive calls and they can’t give you a legitimate number. It’s a scam and I expect them to disappear in less than a month. My review is at:
    http://www.thumpnet.com/P2/mjack.html
I hate to see anybody else fall for it.

In regard to my earlier post, I found that the reason I couldn’t place a call to the Magic Jack was because I was trying to use a compeing VOIP, AT&T Callvantage and they wouldn’t place the call. Calling from other services works just fine and the voice quality is excellent.
I regret I posted the original complaint.

For all those looking to make “international” calls. (also applies to local and US calls as well) I know this is not a “phone” solution but why not just use Yahoo Instant Messenger Service?? My wife communicates with a friend in Australia and the voice quality is pretty damn good, almost as good as a real phone. The only downside is that both parties need internet access but it’s still cheaper than paying “per minute” charges. Try Yahoo, you’ll love the service…

  28. Posted by MIKE 15th November, 2007 at 7:55 pm

I live in Spain and call my friends in the States on a regular basis with crystal clear connection on a broadband with MJ. I’ve got some units left for sale if interested please contact me at MONSEY 1968 at yahoo and I will ship it to you. It is very affordable.

Did they post the call rates for Int’l calls? I’m wondering how much it cost to call Ireland?

  31. Posted by JD 17th November, 2007 at 7:00 pm

My daughter has MagicJack and has used it to call back to the USA from Kenya and Amsterdam.. It works most of the time but it depends on the quality of her internet connection. In Kenya she has the best luck calling when it is the middle of the night for her. We also have a friend living in Germany and one of these was sent to him. He now can call to anywhere in the USA and Canada for free (land line or cell phones). Before that the long distance companies had been raking in the dough. So for anyone that has people calling from overseas - the best plan is to get one of these and send it to them. It is just $40 to get it and use it for a year and then $20 for each year after that. I think a high speed connection would be necessary. It works both ways - you can call from any phone in the USA to that magic jack number and it would be the cost of a long distance call in the USA if the area code was not the same as yours. (The Magic Jack gets assigned a USA number). Most cell phones include long distance so using your cell phone would just be using minutes.

I have not only bought one of these wonderfull gadgets I have bought four. The only problem I am having with them is that i cannot plug more then one per computer. I wanted to use them as my house line, and my fax line. However I can only get one to work at a time. I think this is an awesome instrument I recomend it to anyone that has a computer that is constantly on and is minding their budget. As far as the question of porting your number the answer is NO. Majic jack assigns you a phone number from the usa once you select the area code you are calling from.

  33. Posted by Mike Jefferies 27th November, 2007 at 4:49 pm

    What a piece of junk!!!!
I read the hype, listened to Clark Howard on the radio, and went ahead and bought one.
It took 5 weeks for the first one to arrive (meantime i called and ordered a free replacement - it took two weeks to arrive…neither of the jacks worked and no-one at MJ knew how to troubleshoot and fix it. Oh, and believe me, I tried different computers, different ports, different everything I could to make this thing work…I WANTED IT TO WORK because of the potential savings over regular phone service.
Finally, after weeks of trying, calling MJ support, getting nowhere, I returned the jacks to MJ for a refund…they were not very apologetic, kept blaming the issues on the fact that they are “in a BETA phase” and that it’s not their fault.
Today, about 2 months later I finally got my refund back.

It seems to work for some, but not for others and MJ doesnt even know why - dont bother until the wrinkles are ironed out!!

I have purchased one MJ and plan to buy many additional devices sound quality great

  36. Posted by junior 2nd December, 2007 at 7:08 pm

eric just an fyi, majic jack can only work one unit per computer. so if you buy a lot of jacks you need to have a lot of computers.

  37. Posted by Frank Aguinaga 6th December, 2007 at 3:16 am

I finaloly bought one of these MJ’s and it seem to work in a few minutes when I started to have problems trying to get help was ridiculos and the technician seemed very indifferent with the problems I was encountering. It’s true whe nit works it’s great when it doesn’t work it’s like trying to pull teeth very time consuming and bothersome.

  38. Posted by scb 14th December, 2007 at 7:25 am

What a headache! I asked technical support if it works with a modem. The response: “It will work with up to six telephone lines.” Needless to say, it doesn’t work with a modem. Nor can I get it to work with my University’s server. Perhaps someday I can get it to work. I wish the sales department had been more forthcoming and less pushy.

  39. Posted by nevis 15th December, 2007 at 8:10 pm

The MJ works great if you have the proper equipment. The following are facts about its use.

    1. Must have a Computer (and it must be turned on) MJ uses USB port only.
    2. Broadband Internet connection. (I have cable)
    3. Windows XP or Vista only.
    4. will work with phones that have a single base and satellites for the rest of the house.
    5. If plugged into a phone line it will activate all the phones in the home up to 3-4.
    6. Will not always support fax, some will work.
    7. Can not dial International numbers direct now, it is coming soon on a prepaid basis.
    8. Not all area codes are supported right now. I have been using a Las Vegas # in NC.
    9. Soon you will be able to port your current number to MJ.
    10. Has voice mail, call forward, caller ID, 3 way calling.
    11. Works great traveling with your laptop anywhere broadband (WiFi) is available.

$39.95 1st year including jack cost.
    $19.95 each year thereafter.

    Ok - lets talk economics 101 –

If it sounds to good to be true, then it is a SCAM.

    Basic principles of telecom:

Calls originate and terminate - with costs associate with each leg.

In this case: VOIP call origination
Cost: no access costs to the Local Exchange Carrier (LEC).
Just the cost of your broadband and the device (which you pay for).

Termination: Every call to the PSTN that terminates pays: access fee’s per minute
and a transport fee to the IXC. (Public Switched Telephone Network & Interexchange Carrier or long distance carrier)

On average the termination costs is about .0125 cents per minute.
Then you add in your overhead costs - gateway, broadband, employee’s, etc. - a tightly run company is going to be around: .002 per minute for overhead.

Total termination in the lower 48: .0145 per minute.

    ——————————————————-

    Ok basic math time:

    500 minutes per month x .0145 = $7.25 per month
Then add on costs for voicemail etc. another $2.50 per month
Total Cost $9.75 (not profit - cost)

    $9.75 x 12 = $117 per year

    Price per unit: $40 ?

This product will attract POWER talkers who will easily go over 500 minutes per month.

    ———————————————————-

Advertising $ support ? will it offset the huge losses ?
    ———————————————————–

Use it for as long as it is around, because the basic economics do not support
    a sustained business model.

  41. Posted by Nitro 17th December, 2007 at 7:40 pm

    http://www.ymaxcorp.com/index.html

Upon further research: when you get a call in to your magic jack - the company is billing CABS & RECIP comp fee’s per minute as if they were a CLEC.

Their goal is: you will get almost as many incoming minutes as out going minutes.
Plus they make fatter margin on in state calls.

This company will be a matter of walking a tight rope.
It will be a simple game of: do the numbers balance - and it is all out of their control. They cannot dictate who they get for customers, how you call or get calls, etc.

Sure they can look at industry averages, etc.
Dan is smart - I wouldn’t say it is a SCAM, but I’d say it is a long shot for sure.

Magic jack does work on most phones I use an older UNIDEN EXP 91 works fine calling local and throughout the USA. It would be nice to know from some of the comments what phone you are using since some phones give a clearer sound. Does it work better on a digital or analog phone, which model are you using?

Magic Jack will not work on all phones I found that out today.
I bought a brand new UNIDEN EZ 1996 (sealed box) hearing aid compatible which is cordless for $40.
    http://tinyurl.com/yr2o7w

It gives a message on the screen (warning you must plug in magic jack into USB) then after goes to MJ website.
I understand that this is same phone that doesn’t work either on vonage reading this forum either.

    http://tinyurl.com/2egzoj

I made an international call from the USA to a cell phone location (calling card) and got a lot of static. I used my cell phone calling immediately after using the same (calling card) to call the cell phone there was no static.
Calling directly through a (MJ) computer to computer (MJ) using magic jack works great or through a regular land line phone. It is a real savings for the people who live overseas.

  44. Posted by Karen 23rd December, 2007 at 8:10 pm

I use a Uniden TRU9380 digital Cordless Phone.

    http://electronics.pricegrabber.com/cordless-phones/m/34924984/

    Work good with MagicJack.
MajicJack is really easy to install with no problems.

The sound is clear and no hums or static. I highly reccomend this phone for any voip user. I have used other manufacturers in the past but Uniden is by far the best.

  45. Posted by thegreatfixer 27th December, 2007 at 3:11 am

when making a call what # shows in caller id YOUR MJ # or a virtual #

  46. Posted by Angelina 27th December, 2007 at 3:01 pm

Magic works fine with my XP computer and I leave the computer running all day and night. I’m using a Uniden TRU9360 5.8GHz Digital Expandable Cordless Phone which I bought at Radio Shack (end of year sale) just before Christmas for $20. The sound quality is excellent.
    http://tinyurl.com/yoyqgp

The MJ caller ID is a real phone number for you and its not listed in the phonebook to get those sales people on your line. What counts is it work! You can have anyone call you on that number.
You only get one more change of phone numbers if you don’t like the (area code) which was given to you on your initial setup.

Its amazing why so many people have trouble installing MJ. Its much easier than you can would expect.

I am very interested in purchasing a magic jack but I don’t see my area code listed. I live a bit north of Boston, MA(in area code 978) but I don’t see it offered. Also, can you change your MJ phone number to your home number?

  49. Posted by b77449 29th December, 2007 at 6:42 am

MagicJack arrived today, It took just a minute to set up, called a couple of friends worked great, they called me back, but there was no ringer, only on screen a box asking to accept call, I pressed the curser accept and spoke, good voice quality but all my sound on computer is disabled, I have Soundblaster live. Can someone please help.

  50. Posted by Louie 30th December, 2007 at 12:05 am

Just heard about the MJ product. From what I read on this site, there may be a number of “bugs” to work out before this product will be viable for all connections to be possible. I didn’t see my AC on the list. My particular problem is that I cannot get “hi-speed” in my rural area; ATT/Bell only and they do not have it here. Hence, I am using dial up. I am wondering if it is possible to attain any service or item that will allow one to use their cell connection as an i-net carrier? When I first saw the MJ ad I thought it may be a possible answer. However, that does not seem to be the case at all.

  53. Posted by steve 31st December, 2007 at 5:19 pm

I can’t get my magic jack to work on vista or windows xp. I can’t get a resonse from the company either.

  54. Posted by Steve 1st January, 2008 at 7:03 am

I got mine today. I was at my wits end trying to get it to work. 2 to 3 hours. then I found out that MusicMatch jukebox and Nero software have to be removed. there are others but that is what I had to uninstall to make it work. right after I uninstall it worked fine.
I have had a couple calls that were not clear and I had to hang up but it could be the crappy old phone or something related to my end IE: whatever the computer was doing.
Yahoo Jukebox I think is one of the others that have to go.

so far it seems to OK. there are lots more area codes available then on that link that someone posted. I’m from Boston and I had my choice of 617,781 which is good for me. but Google’s Grand central is a good program to remedy area code problems. Grand central seems to be good no matter what phone service you have for the nice features it offers.

  55. Posted by Steve 1st January, 2008 at 7:05 am

Note I’m not the same Steve as the one using Vista.

  56. Posted by Ellen 1st January, 2008 at 8:40 pm

    Steve,
Where can I go to see what area codes are available for MJ while I still have NOT purchased one yet? Also, how do you get into this Grand Central that you mentioned?

  57. Posted by Steve 1st January, 2008 at 10:21 pm

    Ellen,

Hello, It is owned by Google. Grandcentral is what you want to search for. They will email you back in a day or so with the opening. You have to sign up and wait for them to send you an invitation. Then you get 10 invites to send to friends.
Not a bad service and it is free for now. It may remain free but who knows.
If you read about what it has to offer you will most likely be able to use it somehow.
You can have a GC phone number and it can ring 5 or 6 phones at the same time. Or if you were visiting someone where you have spotty cell service you can program that particular house phone to ring when they call you. That is just a couple of things.
Check it out. I think you have to actually be activating your magicJack to get to the list of area codes available. I don’t know the web address I was at.

  58. Posted by KOHL 2nd January, 2008 at 1:13 pm

I have order a magic Jack about two weeks ago and I am telling you is to good to be true very easy to install actually it will install itself as long as you plug it into usb the call quality it’s amazing very very good. I have vonage for my telephone company the only difference I see its is the price, I was having some trouble with the sound quality in the beginning because everything I did in the computer the sound was coming over the telephone but I fixed that was very easy you just gotta do some reading . I have three computers at home and I tried them all. so far it works in every one of them starting from Windows XP and with windows vista . now from my personal experience if your computer is very slow or if you have the old computer with a slow process the sound quality of your telephone may not be very good . but if you have a good computer with a good processor you never will have a problem with a sound quality. I had a Compaq laptop with Windows XP it has a slow processor and I am telling you I can tell the difference when I use the magic Jack . for 19,95 a year well price speaks for itself . but I think this will be good for a second line telephone until you feel very comfortable with sound quality and everything else .
but remember you have to leave your computer on 24 hours a day for Magic Jack to work

I am very happy with my magic Jack. and I am thinking to order another one

I am reasonably happy wiht the Majic jack

Does anyone know a cordless phone base that operates

on AA or AAA battery that I can connect to magic jack phone out

jack and use the cordless phone to talk

I would like such a set up when I travel or go out of the country

IF I have a set up then I don’t have look for a outlet to connect the

power to the cordless phone base and I can simply port it

So I am looking for a corless phone which has battery (AA or AAA)

operated base and battery operated hand set

I ordered the Magic Jack and want to send it back as there are NO area codes for this area (940) or (806).
How do I return this as I cannot find Magic Jack ’s address, phone number, email
and the support.com does not work?
Something is wrong when you cannot find where to return this as no paper work was sent and evelope had no return address???????????????????????

So disappointed in their advertising. They made it sound so easy and that it would work anywhere in the united States.

    Mozelle Gwynne

I don’t work for Magic Jack

But believe me it works just like they say

Don’t worry if they don’t have the area code that you live in

For example the number I am assigned to is not in

my area code. But I can stillmake all the outgoign long distance

calls. The only thing is my friends can’t call me without incurring long distance

charges. I still have my land line that they could call

Once they get numbers in all the area codes , yours and mine then

the incoming call problem will be solved

Have you talked to Dan via chat about how to send your MJ back

I am happy with mine though my number currently is not in my local

    area code

  62. Posted by Indy Ram 6th January, 2008 at 3:29 am

    Steve

The number I am assigned is not in my area code

I signed up with grand central

I have a number with grand central that is in my local area code

However if I tried to link my magic jack number which is in different

area code it doesn’t accept it

It says the magic jack number is not a valid number

So Grand central scheme may not work for incoming call

I have been using MJ for a few months. Very easy install on XP Computer. Most important is to use a good digital phone for a clear reception rather than a cheap analog phone that gives you a bunch of static.

One problem I have is when I’m making a international phone calls out of USA by using MJ and dial in my (12 digit calling card number) it does not work now. When I first got MJ it worked fine for a couple weeks.

My calling card is valid I know for sure because I can call through a landline and cell phone using same calling card number.

I know they are coming up with pre-paid minutes for international calling january 11th,2008 but why can’t I dial in my own calling card?

MJ works great on my XP computer but not well at all on my Vista Dell Latitude D620. It comes up and complains that No audio devices were found and won’t call or receive calls.

I have run their VISTA upgrade but this didn’t help. I do have Yahoo Music Jukebox on my laptop that it seems to think is Music Match Jukebox and that MagicFix complains about, but that is also on my desktop with XP and doesn’t cause problems there.

I will try support chat again today for the laptop, but it wasn’t very promising when I tried it last night. Very slow responses from the tech, and the responses didn’t seem to be very knowledgeable.

It is looking like I won’t be able to use it on my laptop at all. I was hoping for it to take over duty for my home business line.

After reading the posts about others’ experiences with the Magic Jack, I come to the conclusion that it is like anything else: It may work and it may not.

Pay your nickel and take your ride. If it doesn’t work, don’t use it and send it back.

    What’s the hoo-hah about?

    1. how will i get my other phones in my house to work if i use magic jack if i turn off my phone from my telephone company?.

    2. we have two computers in two different rooms .. will i have to buy two [one for each room] ..meaning two different phone numbers for one house?.

    3. what is the real deal on the price hearing so many different prices on different sites?.

    4. are there any hidden charges ?

    5. if i cancel my phone service how will i use my fax?

  74. Posted by peggiebaker 20th January, 2008 at 8:22 pm

This is the best phone line ever. Verizon insisted that they had to come and get into the phone line they installed on my home phone, in order to fix it. Not only would I have to be at home for them, they said they would have to place a service in home charge to my account as well as me paying for repairs. MagicJack arrived in the mail that same afternoon and verizon got tossed to the curb. See ya, don’t want to be ya. Bye Verizon….

My MJ works fine. I have used it for several months. What a good deal compared to having a landline using ATT and their added service charges.

You can now buy MJ on e-bay but not much of a savings compared to going directly to MJ site.

Check this site if you have questions on product. Maybe you find your answer. No hidden charges when you purchase MJ.

Using a Uniden digital phone with extra handsets you can have your whole house full of phones. Digital phones are clear with no static.

i’ve had my magic jack over a month. some problems, but i’ve found most of them to be something on my computer preventing it from working properly. works fine on both computers now. i don’t like that there’s no phone no. to reach someone at customer service, which is not the greatest. chat is ok, they have helped me through a couple issues.

someone asked about faxing. i has been working fine with my fax. magic jack says it does not officially support fax (don’t ask customer support). one of the reasons i wanted it was for fax capabilities. i got rid of my land line 2 years ago when comcast went to $60 a month, now that everyone’s dumping them they’ve come down. too little too late. anyway, with only a cell, it’s tough when i need to fax. it may be a bit slow some times, but be patient, the faxes have been working & it’s better than not being able to fax at all.

no hidden charges. i paid the $39.99 for the unit & first year service. i did buy the 2nd year for $19.99. plenty of coupon coupon codes out there to get a couple dollars off on shipping. standard shipping is $6, i think. the coupon codes expire & change, so web search “magicjack coupon code” for the current one to use. mine came in a couple days.

the same magic jack will work on different computers. it loads the software on each one when you plug it in. i can plug it into my desktop that’s plugged directly into the router upstairs or use it on my laptop through a wireless connection downstairs.

like someone else said, it’s ideal for someone who has exclusively been using a cell without a land line. and it can work with a fax machine, even though they don’t guarantee it.

i’ve just learned from this site that i can plug it into a wall jack to activate other phones in the house. i’ve been using couplers & running analog lines all over my house like i did in the past for the rooms without a phone connection. thanks for the tip. i’m going to go try it now.

i have ordered a magicjack 3 weeks back. have not heard from them neither is there a number to get back to them. just received an auto-email which has the order number.
Does anyone know how do i get to them to find out if they have processed my order?
I chose the standard shipping, so there is no way to trace if the shipment was made.
I tried the online chat thrice, but there was no reply for more than 30-40 min everytime.
Would appreciate your help. Thank You,

I got my magic jack in one week. It works great. One issue is that there are no local exchanges for my local area.( I believe that will soon change.) Not a extreme problem for me but long distance for those who call me. All said, I intend to buy more to give to a few friends.

Now to my real point…..all you negative folks……I would give $40.00 for a year for phone service in a minute…That is less than 1/12 of my current annual service charge.

It is worth $40.00 to attempt to replace your current carrier.

By the way, your sweetest revenge for their past indiscretions is calling them up to tell them you do not need them any longer. It is actually the only message the automated beast will understand.

  80. Posted by Ray 26th January, 2008 at 1:07 am

Magic Jack………At first I thought that my incoming calls didn’t work. Then I tried calling the MJ number using the 1 plus area code from my regular phone and it worked. I hope they can fix this because who will know that they will have to dial an area code to make a local call to me while they are in the same area code.

I have ordered an MJ and can’t wait for it to arrive. If, after I have set up the MJ on my laptop, can I then take it to Europe and plug it into another computer (high speed connected) and use it without problems? My wife will be in Germany and I would like to have her call home on the MJ. If that is possible, is it a big undetaking for her to use it in Germany?

  87. Posted by Janet 3rd February, 2008 at 9:02 pm

In response to Raquens - if you can find high speed internet it should work fine in Haiti unless for some reason VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) is blocked there. The only country where we have had trouble so for has been UAE.

For Jack: - We had good luck with using the MJ from Germany and it has saved my daughter hundreds of dollars I am positive. I think your wife will find it simple to set up.

if you don’t have internet services can the mj still work

  89. Posted by Saool 5th February, 2008 at 5:53 am

Magic has only one limitation compared with the usual voip adapters- it can only drive (ring) a limited load either in phone line length or number of phones hooked up even with short line length. USB ports on computers have a 5 volt supply current capacity that varies from computer to computer but generally it is marginal for the heavier loads needed to drive more line length and phones It is possible to boost this by tapping in power from an external supply and maybe get it to be equivalent to the usual VOIP adapters which can drive many phones and long lines. But this extra current capacity may not be safely handled by the driver built in the MJ. However a separate audio amp. that can handle the ringing AC could fill the bill and make it possible to stretch a MJ installation to drive a whole house. I you have good outgoing but no incoming ring it is possible the phone or line you are connecting to the MJ output is the problem.

  90. Posted by Jack Stevenson 7th February, 2008 at 12:43 am

My MJ arrived today and I got the system up and running fairly quickly. The only problem I really had was the calling party could not hear me but I could hear them loud and clear (excellent quality). I was using an analog phone which I found to be the culprit. I switched to a 5.8 GHz digital model and the problem was solved. The sound quality is excellent in both directions. I spent some time chatting with Ben, on the technical help line, during the set up phase and found him most helpful. He walked me thru some technical questions and got me established. I am one very, very happy customer. It’s a bargain and it works just as advertised.

I have the mj and it works great at first. I had it hooked up to one computer and after about 2 hours, the internet service quit. I plugged it up to a laptop and the same thing happened. I took it to work and plugged it up to my computer and laptop and it worked great all day. AT&T says they “charged” the line to make sure that everything is working correctly and they say that I have not had any interruptions on their end. When I don’t have the MJ plugged up at my house, I have internet service 24-7. It is only after I plug it up that I lose the service after 2 hours or so. Would anyone think that it had something to do with the phone that I have it hooked up to? Any suggestions?

In Jan, 2008, I ordered on-line the Magic Jack. After receiving it, I tried to get it to work with poor results, even after about 4 hours back and forth with their chat help on-line.

I retured their product and they stopped the charges against our bank account.

Well, today, over a month later, they again charged our bank account?

I went to chat, and after about a hour of nonsense, they claimed I had ordered the item AGAIN…… Absolutely not true. I was very unhappy the first time and would NEVER have bought another one….

After getting a long run-around from them, I kept the chat and will wait until Monday (today is Feb 28) to see what happens.

They refused to give me their address.
They refused to give me their phone number.

The only way they could have a record of yet a SECOND order is:

    (1) Computer error.
    (2) Employee error.
    (3) Some type of SCAM…….

    I don’t know which YET…..

I would like to hear from any others having a similar problem with them:

I want to order MJ but need some answers b4 making my decision. I had called the 800-491-5388 no. I saw on TV to no avail, then visited their site and no contact no was avail. either. Having read the above comments, I’m convinced thata s muchas I’m tired of having AT&T rip me off, I need some answers re MJ first.

1] Is there a contact no. one can call MJ directly to make inquiries. I don’t want to buy a product online from an invisible merchant that [per the comments read so far] seem unreachable?

2] Can I use this as a 2nd line in tcase I decide to keep my landline for my biz.?

3] Will this work fine on my XP laptop?

4] Is the true cost $39.95 or are there extra hidden charges that will spring up, like AT&T does to rip one off?

5] What no. and address are avail. should I decide to return the product?

    Thanks.

  117. Posted by Adam C 7th March, 2008 at 2:01 pm

Larry, I have the same problem with AT & T. I cancelled my phone line, but kept the DSL service. When I plug the MJ into the USB and leave it for a while, my DSL service shuts off (about 2 hours). If I don’t have it hooked up, then the DSL service works fine. I called AT&T and they said that they “charged” the line to clear anything out. So far, that did absolutely nothing. I have to get a tech out there to figure out why it is not working according to them. I also plugged it up at my office and it works great with no problems. And I hooked it up to several different computers at my work and at home, including my laptop that I had at my house and then took to the office. Again, it has to be something with the phone line. Let me know if you have any success.

AWESOME PRODUCT!!! I got my MJ yesterday. I had some serious problems configuring it…..because I lacked the G7.11.acm audio codec. I was getting a bbb.bbb.bbb sound when calling out (similar to a busy sound). Spent hours on tech chat…..They didn’t help much. There suggestion on how to install the g7.11.acm codec didn’t work (install divx player from http://www.divx.com). I finally found a place to get the codec and install it.

    http://codec.alshow.co.kr/Page/en/g711.htm

HERE IS WHERE TO GET IT!!!! I also moved the codec to priority 1 in the audio codec properties under device manager. GREAT SOUND…..well for a bit then some clicking going on…..It was the RF Signal Amp I had installed the previous day trying to remedy the problem. After I put a regular splitter in its place……Oh what joy fills my soul…..NOW I CAN

CUT MY CELL PHONE MINUTES DOWN AND USE MY MAGIC JACK WHEN I AM AT HOME…….SCREEN MY CELL CALLS AND CALL THEM BACK DURING PEAK TIME……OH AT THE MONEY TO BE SAVED……THANKS MJ!!!!

    WARNING
I tried Magic Jack and it would not work with my Tablet PC at all, so I requested a RMA# and got it, then I mailed the item back via “Delivery Confirmation” and it did get there.
Later they charged my card $46. and refuse to answer my emails, won’t answer my attempts to do their Tech Chat and I can’t get a phone # to reach them at. I have been cheated and they refuse to even answer me.
I’m now forced to file a complaint against them at the Post Office and at Ripoff Report.com cause they charged me $46. for a product that, 1 didn’t work for me and 2 they now have back in their hands.
I WARN YOU ALL to not be so fast to trust these people with your banking info, or you too may get to pay $46. for nothing.
    CScott Cantrell
For the $46. they cheated me out of, I intend to spread the word about them to every site on the net, so other people can be warned.

    Hey kids,
Thought all of you might be able to use this little email addres for the actual inventor of mj.
This is Dan Borislow, the Inventor. It does work with USB 1.1.We do offer Tech Chat to help out anybody who needs it.We are dramatically increasing the staff everyday.I think you will find a very short wait time now and within 2 weeks,we are going to 24/7 too.We also offer Sales chat and a pretty good knowledge base that will get better and better over time to answer many different types of questions. My last company I had, sold over 4 mil customers AOL Long Distance and recieved a JD Powers award.I intend on this company getting the same.So not only will we provide you the very best price, but we will get you the best voice quality with very good customer service. If you are having any issues, feel free to email me at Dan@magicjack.com Let me add, this Editor’s Choice we recieved ,has made us extremely proud coming from the Best magazine in the industry. We will do our best to keep this “award” Dan Borislow

BUYERS BEWARE !!! The customer service is horrible ! I didn’t even receive the product and couldn’t get a basic refund policy question answered. If the customer service is bad before you have the product in hand I can only imagine how bad it gets when you do have the product.

    hello

I bought 4 magicjack and i want recharge with US$10 all numbers but only can recharge one (1) of them.
I need know what to do

  123. Posted by Wessal 8th March, 2008 at 11:45 pm

I wrote the “BUYERS BEWARE ” opinion and have since been contacted by a gentleman named Dan. I can’t say that there is a resolution just yet, BUT he has been most professional.

I read online that Dan is one of the founders of Magic Jack. If that’s true, I am even more pleased to have heard from him. The e-mail address I wrote to is dborislow@aol.com.

I hope Dan’s company is successful, that the customer service improves and that there will be a customer service number soon.

Wow, I just bought one online with my credit card. I’ve been reading alot of nitemares here. I wished I hadnt bought it now. Sounds like I’m gonna have trouble getting my money back IF it dont work and IF and WHEN I do get it. Or maybe it will work and I’m just being negative. LOL

  125. Posted by BadSamaritan 11th March, 2008 at 2:24 pm

Many of the “pros” and too few legitimate “cons” are revealed here. First this is a start up enterprise. expect some glitches. I would in no way qualify this as a reliable VOIP system that can compete with other services such as Vonage and Comcast digital voice, both of which are over priced. The Magic Jack software commits not only an open aplication and a nice chunk of memory, but a very annoying prompt to accept or refuse the call, pops up on every incoming call. This pop up prompt pops up over any application, and if your gaming or doing your taxes, it will interrupt your current apllication. Apparently, they belive your too stupid to hear a phone ring and answer it. I made 25 incoming calls from a cell phone, less than half connected. Connected to a computer USB port, it can send enough power to ring ONE phone. Even with a powered USB external port, the Magic Jack will still ring only ONE phone. When it does ring the phone, it rings a MAXIMUM of 4 times. Every time it connected, it rand a maximum of four times.

Dispite these annoying glitches, the price is right. If YMAX gets it going, this will be a great piece of hardware.

  126. Posted by Steve 11th March, 2008 at 3:50 pm

are you saying if you have mj hooked up to a base phone, it will not ring any other phones that are wireless to it around the house? I have not gotten rid of ma bell yet and just wondering

  127. Posted by Wessal 13th March, 2008 at 8:36 pm

OK ! I bought 2 Magic Jacks and 2 5 year service plans. After making the purchase I decided I wanted to cancel the service plans but had a hell of a time getting customer service just to tell me what their refund policy was.

I found one of the founders’ e-mail addresses, wrote to him and problem solved. He could not have been more professional. Thank-you Dan.

    His address is dborislow@aol.com.

MAJIC JACK WORKS GREAT!!!! I AM SAVING OVER $900/YR WITH EVEN MORE FEATURES THAN BEFORE. YOU CAN EVEN GET YOUR VOICEMAIL MESSAGES THROUGH YOUR E-MAIL ACCOUNT SO YOU CAN LISTEN TO THEM ANYWHERE THE IS INTERNET ACCESS. I HAVE HAD ZERO PROBLEMS AND I HAVE RECEIVED EVERYTHING THAT WAS PROMISED IN THE AD. I COULDN’T BE MORE PLEASED!!!

  130. Posted by Brian Vinson 14th March, 2008 at 10:41 pm

IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE POWERING MORE THAN ONE PHONE I SUGGEST A 5.8 MHZ CORDLESS WITH MUTIPLE HANDS SETS. I BOUGHT ONE WITH FOUR HANDSETS FOR LESS THAN ONE MONTHS OLD PHONE BILL. BY NEXT MONTH MAGIC JACK WILL HAVE PAID FOR ITSELF.

  131. Posted by Brian Vinson 14th March, 2008 at 10:45 pm

I YOU SET THE OPTION TO “HANDSET” YOUR HOME PHONE WILL STILL RING BUT THEN YOU ALSO HAVE THE ABILITY TO ANSWER THE PHONE THROUGH YOUR COMPUTER’S MIC AND SPEAKERS OR A HEADSET IF YOU HAVE ONE. VERY CONVENIENT NOT TO HAVE TO GET UP TO ASWER THE PHONE WHILE BUSY ON THE COMPUTER OR NOT BOTHER IF ITS A CALL YOU DO NOT WANT TO TAKE.

  132. Posted by Brian Vinson 14th March, 2008 at 10:50 pm

IF YOU DONT WANT THE SOFT PHONE BOX TO “POP UP” ON SCREEN, JUST DRAG IT OFF THE SCREEN INTO A CORNER LIKE ANY OTHE WINDOW.

  133. Posted by Jon 14th March, 2008 at 11:48 pm

I purchased the MJ 3 nights ago and I’ve had nothing but major problems. Also, their ‘cust srvc’ (lol) sucks, sucks, sucks!!! They’re almost as bad as their product. Fortunately, I’m still in the 30 day period, so naturally it’s going right back.

Buyer Beware! Don’t throw your money away on this thing - It’s a piece of CRAP!

Where do these wolves come from? V—-e, T–e W—-r, S—e, and others? LOL LOL LOL. This is funnnnnnny. They know they will be in the unemployment line soon. LOL. So what they do is poor their misery upon the happy users of magicJack. LOL.

Just got rid of V—–n. Working on geting rid of V—-e.

If Dan sees this, I am one of your most important Resellers. When do you plan to offer 800 service? I will be your first customer.

When do you plan to implement your cell phone service? I will be your first customer of it too! Have you launched your satelite yet? (Just kiddin).

I love your product Dan, and I plan on having at least 1,000 dealers across the country selling for me by the end of 2008.

As you may already know, I am giving a Dealer presentation next Tues.

I am also offering Telephone support to my dealers’ customers only.

Dan, hurry with that 800 service. The costs from two 800 service companies i now use are eating away at my already worn out wallet. Please plan on offering ACD & IVR at a very low cost.

I plan on having 7,777 home-based agents answering my OVERSIZE LOAD Help Desk 800 # by 2014.

I can see YMax & magicJack the #1 Telephony Companies in the World by the end of 2010.

    Thank You for your invention.

    Bob

    p.s.
I wonder how many of those other company reps will sign up to be my dealers by year end. LOL

mj worked great, but then incoming calls neither party can hear the other one. mj staff more than helpful, but each chat session we rehash the same tips on how to fix it. to no avail, mj doesnt produce audio on incoming. it did so for 9 days straight then quit doing so. i cannot get it to ring all the phones in my house w/ or w/o a powered usb hub
i like the quality of the calls, but need the ic issue resolved

  137. Posted by Arewa 18th March, 2008 at 8:23 am

I decided to take a chance and go ahead and order MJ the same day I made my initial posting, and I’m glad to report that
1] it was mailed out to me the same day, and I picked it up when I visited my mail box by the weekend.
2] I had no problems installing it on my XP.
3] It has worked fine for the 8 days Ive had it.
4] the call waiting feature works fine.
5] It was initially frustrating trying to set up the voice mail, but I eventually got it working and it works fine.
6] Incoming calls are fine also.
7] Having read the comments re: MJ contact, I’ve kept the packaging envelope so I have a return address, just in case.
8] I log off my computer overnight, but immediately I log on in the a.m. MJ automatically boots up and I can resume calling.
For what was promised I am one satisfied customer so far. I plan to take it out of town soon and hopefully the results will be the same. I’m glad I took a chance since no one responded to my previous questions except for the email address Steve & Wessal have now provided. Thanks guys.

  138. Posted by Arewa 18th March, 2008 at 8:46 am

My major concern now is how to get rid of AT&T and still have DSL as they are seriously ripping me off and I’m tired of some of their very rude and/or incompetent staff. I inquired as to whether I could keep DSL without keeping even their basic service and was told I couldn’t.
Gina I know you responded to Larry’s question, so maybe you can please advice me since it seems you were able to keep only their DSL. AT&T must be trying to jerk themselves around as usual.
My other concern is that my tel. no. is revealed to all recipients and I value my privacy, so I can’t wait until they add an unpublished no feature. …and an 800 customer service no. would definitely be appreciated.

  139. Posted by Jon 19th March, 2008 at 1:56 am

Hi, this is Jon and I posted a very negative comment on 14th March, 2008 at 11:48 pm where I called the MJ ‘a piece of crap’… I was reeeally frustrated at the time. Well, I wholeheartedly retract that statement and I’m here to say that I’ve never been more wrong about anything!

Dan Borislow contacted me personally (yes, that’s his real email address - I know, I didn’t really think it was either) and hooked me up with the head of his customer support team (Ritchie, you’re the man!). Seriously, you could have knocked me over with a feather!!! I was expecting a load of anonymous, generic, useless rhetoric and instead I received personal contact from real people who cared enough about their product and cared enough about my satisfaction that they fedexed a new unit to me overnight at no charge!!!

I guess the first one was just a bad one in the lot – hey, it happens – but needless to say, everything is working perfectly now and with excellent reception and sound quality… These guys really proved their mettle. Dan Borislow doesn’t just ‘talk the talk’, he really walks the walk folks!

If you don’t give the Magic Jack a fair try, you’ll truly be losing out! Take a bow, Dan!

I purchased magic jack a few days ago, it came in 3 days and installed fine, worked great for the first few hours, but am now having problems. It tells me to connect to the internet, which I am. I contacted Tech support and nothing they told me to try worked. I changed USB ports and it started working fine. Then again I get the same message, switching USB ports did not do the trick again. It all of sudden started working when I received a call and seemed fine for another few hours and again is now down. Has anyone else had this problem? It tells me to connect to the internet and double click (error 3) something to do with proxy registration. I was supposed to receive an email when I first installed, that I was supposed to respond to in order to insure no interruptions, but I never got that email. I would like to try and resolve this issue, I know this is a new product and was expecting some difficulties. Anyone with any info would be greatly appreciated.

  142. Posted by Tej 20th March, 2008 at 1:17 pm

This is a piece of scrap. Right from day one everyday I have to spend hours on useless tech chat who takes a lot of time to respond to each question and they dont know anything. They are as good as their product useless. Its full of problems. Buying magicjack is nothing but throwing your money out in the gutter. Piece of scrap.

Does anyone have a phone # for MJ?
I would like to talk to a person.

  146. Posted by amelia 22nd March, 2008 at 4:27 pm

I have had my MJ for about two weeks now, I ordered two. The first one did not work at all, the second one started working immediately. There still are somethings that need to be worked out.

I can generally only make one call before I have to reset the MJ. Sometimes it says it’s ready to dial and there is no dial tone. When it is woking the phone is very clear.

I plan to upgade my phone to see if I can get better reception all the time. I found out that when I am not getting a dial tone the softphone still can dial the number even though you can’t hear the connection.

I do plan to return the one that doesn’t work, but I plan to keep the other one. I still think it’s a good price even if it doesn’t wok all the time.

I have had my MagicJack for about a month and have had little problem getting it installed on both an old Toshiba laptop (Windows XP) and a brand new HP Tablet (Vista). It has been a little scratchy at times, but that is not my problem I am seeking help with.

I am trying to install on a two-year-old HP Entertainment computer. I have tried the Mac X OS upgrades, etc. and still keep getting the error message: “Warning: You must plug MagicJack into USB”.

Does anyone have any advice or help?

    Thanks in advance!

how do you do three way on the magic jack?

  149. Posted by Ruben 23rd March, 2008 at 1:27 am

MJ is great!!!! It works as it is advertised. Only 3 to 4 minutes to get configured the first time it was installed, and only 1 minute every time I turn on the pc to use MJ. Great, excellent!!!! I’m strongly recommend it.

  150. Posted by Gary 23rd March, 2008 at 2:01 am

Here is the site for magicjack in Canada:

    http://www.themagicjack.ca/

  151. Posted by tdmorgan 23rd March, 2008 at 5:40 am

I decided that the issue might be associated with the XP version that I was using and decided to upgrade to Vista. I have the upgrade disks. When I tried to access the DVD, it could not be found! I was getting an error code (39) and searched the internet, finally figuring out that I needed to simply remove the “high” and “low” filters in the registry. Anyway, to make a long story short, this fixed the DVD. Then, I decided to try the MagicJack again to see if it might have been fixed.

    It DID fix the error.

The MagicJack has worked OK so far, but don’t try using it through a wireless network or with a slow machine. It works fine on a fast machine and through a CAT5 (direct) connection into the router.

    Aloha!

    Pretty happy indeed!

    Two quick questions>

#1 Does USB 2.0 improve the sound quality over 1.1?
#2 Do people accrue a long distance toll when calling from outside my MagicJack area code?

    TIA

  153. Posted by Casey 24th March, 2008 at 8:31 am

For the person asking how to 3-way call .I found this on the website for you.

Yes, magicJack supports 3-way (conference) calling.

    Calls must be incoming.

When you have two incoming calls (one on hold), press ## to start a three-way call. Press #* to end the three-way call.

Will I be able to use my old phone number in the future?

  156. Posted by Al 24th March, 2008 at 9:12 pm

I bought a unit and received it in short order. However, I don’t know what the phone number is and the password to access my account, which has been sent 3 times, doesn’t work. I have spent over 5 hours on their ‘help’ chat line, only to be told that they cannot release that information due to confidentiality reasons. Of course, there is no email address to write to, much less a telephone number to contact, so I guess my $80 is wasted. I guess you get what you pay for. Or in my case, let the buyer beware.

  157. Posted by Robin 25th March, 2008 at 1:23 am

I ordered one and got two…..then I was charged for two. I contacted the customer service and they said I would receive a call in two days….Its been about 15 days and still no call but they billed me for two. I saved the whole conversation with the tech. Then I received a flash email, order one for 49.99 and receive a five year subscription instaed of 39.99 for one year….They billed me 90.00 for one and then 90.00 for the other which they mistakingly sent to me and charged me for. My wife called and still had the same problems….I don’t think I like the way this is going and I haven’t even used it yet

  158. Posted by George 25th March, 2008 at 2:23 pm

Against my better judgment I am ordering one today.

The website for this thing is an unholy mess. Tech support is restricted to a single chat line, with all the resulting horror stories, and the start up costs are higher than advertised.

Having said all that the word of mouth and reviews of the product from sources I trust are to good to ignore.

When you send an email regarding returns, which is on their website you get an automatic message saying that site is no longer available and to use customer service, that site does not work eithr.

I purchased the magic jack and it did not work. I followed the insturction 1 plug phone to MJ 2 MJ to usb 3 pick up phone and call. Did not work the software never downloaded and I tryed doing it manually but did not work I even bought another usb port and nothing. Then i had to chat with customer service and wait about 3-5 min for every response. I must have waisted about 2 hours just trying to convince them on how to return the product. I had to threaten to get a lawyer or news station involved. Then and only then did they send me a link to return the Magic Jack sorry I dont have the link but you do need to input you order number and what not but the address to return the Magic Jack is PO Box 6846 west palm beach fl 33405

I received the magic jack last week end. Its been working fine so far. I’m using it with a HP pentium III/450Mhz/256Ram/ computer, yeah I know a dinosaur. I’m using MJ with a Denver area code instead of Colorado Springs because 719 area code is pending but not active yet. We are a house hold family that use cell phones and we all have the same cell company. Its nice to have a alternative as a house phone without the high monthly cost. Well I guess I shoudn’t say that, Qwest do have a no monthly plan and you pay 15 cent per minute use. I still like the majic jack better for now.

  168. Posted by Brazil D Uluwita 28th March, 2008 at 6:23 pm

I have made only two phone calls at the very first day I tried it. From the next day onwards MagicJack was crashing my system and I just couldn’t do anything with my pc. My operating system is VISTA and I did everything right if not I wouldn’t be able to make those two calls.
    After that everything went wrong.
#1 When I make a call I can’t hear the other end ringing or talking to me well as the other end can’t hear me. When I hung-up the call I made to check magic jack ( I called my cell phone ) it is still ringing even after I hung-up MajicJack.. So I can’t hear anything from the other end but they can receive my call that is it. They can’t hear me or I can’t even hear their phone ringing or answering.

#2 It is always crashing and gave a such an hard time to my PC.
    # Technical support is horrible. I have spend for this issue oer a Four days period like Six hours of my time with no result. Every time for a technician to answer One question tkes like Four minutes that is only for
One question over so many so you can imagine how long I have spend. Their knowledge very basic. Takes so long to answer. Every hour minuets so MagicJack is crashing. Sorry to tell MagickJack was over all a waist of my time. I want to return it and where do I get the retuned envelop. Please give me the information where to get my return envelop please I can’t waist any more time all I need is the return envelop.

I am getting screaming mad at my magicjack. I just got it last week, installed with no problem. It has worked maybe a total of 3 hours in a week. I have switched out phones, rebooted everything. Sometimes I can make calls, sometimes I get a dialtone but it never calls. People cant call me. The phone rings but nobody on the other end. I try calling a local state agency number and I get a recording saying “the nextel wireless caller you are calling is not available”.
Magic Jack sounds like a great concept but it sure isnt working for me. THank goodness for the 30 try it offer because I think it is going back.

  170. Posted by John 29th March, 2008 at 12:39 am

Got my MJ today. Not very happy. Like some others, installed, have dial-tone, but can’t dial. I get an Error 3, but can’t find anything on their website to tell me what that is, or how to fix it. Tried to call the 888 number which came up during install, it doesn’t ring or give a busy tone or anything, just dead-air. Tried Tech Chat, that was useless too. On top of all that, the Area Code list they have on their website shows my local area code as ACTIVE, 954. But when I installed the MJ, guess what, that was not an area code I could select. Will probably return it before the trial is over, unless they help or I can get it working to call out and receive calls. Anyone know anything about this problem?

This is a great device, it works on my fax, my dishnetwork satilite, and I have hooked it in for all my phones in my house. I have a DSL line with at&t with no landline attached to it. This is called a dry line dsl only. If you get a Magic Jack and it works, and you would like to save 300 to 800 a year get it , it works. The only draw back is you might have to get a number thats in another state, which will change when they get more numbers. You also need to be able to work the computer very well.
