Nokia to launch a cellular carrier in Japan

My friend Andy Abramson gets a hat tip for this via Reuters.
I discussed this three times this week during meetings and I think we are going to see much more of it.
Here is the major problem for all manufacturers, They sell a phone and that’s it, they have no further income from it, the carriers sell it on a discount and make a lifetime of income from that phone and connection.
I can envisage lots of manufacturers following Nokia’s lead on this and I think you will see more of these announcements sooner rather than later

    Hi Pat,

As we have discussed before, it makes perfect sense for them to do this.

Nokia is a device company, and now an “Internet services” company.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see them doing something like this in the US (although it’d be harder).

They are doing this in Japan to increase their device marketshare. What better to increase your brand than launch your own mobile network.

Almost no-one knows Nokia (even though people continue to mistake Nokia for “some Japanese company”).

    Good move.

The only question is: will they stick to UMTS and GSM? Even GSM probably won’t be used..
