O2 Ireland Apple 3G network down all day of launch

What a fantastic start for O2
The Irish 3G iphone data network hasn’t functioned at all today.
Stephen O rielly
I called to 3 O2 stores in Cork in the last hour and a carphone warehouse store and staff are tearing their hair out because of the complaints.
Chris Mehigan
Average wait times to support are over 20 minutes and I was personally told it “might be ok tomorrow”
I can only connect on wifi, if I attempt to connect to cellular network I get

“could not activate cellular data network, PDP authentication failure”

Well against the little voice inside my head I went and queued today and am regreting it already.
Well done O2, total FUBAR
Here is my first attempt 50 minutes and told all fine, NOPE

well that’s it, they don’t know what’s wrong and are finishing at 8pm

Update 12th of July
Master reset of iPhone, new 3G SIM, disconnected and reconnect of data connection
Still no data connection, will update daily, anyone would think I upset them :-)

I had 3.5G in Bishopstown on O2 for a lot of the morning on the BB dongle. Looks like it may be an iPhone specific problem?

    @conor Definitely iPhone specific problem
3G running perfect on dongle for me, what a day for them to fuck up?

Is this the Global Activation issue that Apple have been having?

Almost feel good about not having gotten a phone this morning. Setting up my contacts and calendar on Google now (on Mr Mulley’s recommendation) as the ill-thought through and implemented MobileMe is a crackin example of how not to deliver a hosted service.

Had similar problems too. Bought my 3g iphone this morning, noticed that i couldnt send texts or access the web using 3g. I can make calls, recieve calls and texts.

In fairness to the girl in O2 experience on Patrick Street she did her best to help, it was driving her mad trying to figure things out, and after the best part of 40mins on the phone she finally got onto someone who said it was an apple issue that o2’s network was working 100%. took out my new 3g number and popped back in my old 2g sim so at least i have calls text and ipod.

the person on the phone said try again in 24hours.

It doesn’t sound like a issue with the network but rather like one with the authentication server. I suspect that O2 thought that they could sell truckloads of new devices without investig in the infrastructure to handle the extra network and NOC load.
All these new iPhones are trying to authenticate at the same time and the server tells them to bugger off because it is too busy.
    It’s not a new issue either: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=389845

thanks Evert Bopp - finally an answer thats making sense! When im sending a text I get “error sending message” and trying to surf through safari gives me “could not activate cellullar data network: pdp authentication failure”.

So what you say seems to make sense about authentication.

No 3G here either (Dublin) since I got the iPhone yesterday. Phone works fine otherwise. Looks like O2 dropped the ball. 3G was my main reason for getting the iPhone….Nothing on their website, of course, although there should be a groveling apology in huge red letters.

Not sure where else to post this - but today I got it fixed by speaking to customer care.

Sim card was activated and designated as “Speak Easy” which of course is wrong, Customer Care changed it to “Bill Pay” and asked me to power down and start my iPhone again. I was told that this would fix the issue with being unable to send text messages.

It fixed it. But it also fixed the data problem for me. I am now able to go online and have full use of the iPhone. Very happy with the result and passed my feedback on to O2.

Was a silly mistake - but I’m just glad it is fixed.!

Pat I sent you a DM on twitter with my number if you want to call me to chat about this fix.

@Chris: the kind folks at O2 Experience Dundrum checked everything re the setup of my SIM card and account, but still no 3G for me :-(. O2 3G comes up as an option when I look at available carriers, but there is no little 3G icon on my phone and I can’t connect to the internet when Wi-Fi is turned off.

i was onto o2 customer care aswell earlier, the woman I was talking to said that they were the problem regarding the text issue and that they were working it to get it sorted asap, esp with the amount if iphones sold yesterday.

im not in an area with great 3g at the moment but she said that it should be working. ill be back in cork tomorrow, so i can check that then, chances are its a 100% o2 issue. time will tell.

my sim setup is 100% and was all checked for me in 02 experience on patrick street a few hours after I bought it yesterday.

O2 is blaming Apple… “I’m sorry to hear that you are experiencing such difficulties with your
new iphone. There is currently an issue with Apple and I would advise
you to call their customer Care Helpline for assistance. The number is:
1850946191. You could try the following first as it may help you:

Settings => General => Reset => Reset network settings

If not, please call Apple as we cannot assist you further.”

Needless to say, the reset made no difference. I must say that I fail to see how the issue could be with Apple. Anyway, if it’s not resolved on Monday the iPhone is going back….

SOLVED! GPRS was switched off for my SIM card. Took a couple of calls to O2 (who first blamed Apple, then second person I got through to found the problem…) Why GPRS was switched off when I changed to iPhone I don’t know, as it was on for my previous phone. Relieved that my phone is now working as advertised, but kind of pissed off at O2 for FUBAR’ing the initial setup.
