Thanks for this...... I just got my 32gb 3gs iphone on friday 22/01/10 and have been using wifi on it with no problems, but I couldn't connect to gprs, I thought it was weak signal or something, after I read this post i contacted o2 ireland they said everything looked ok, within a few mins of getting off the phone and switching my phone off/on it was working, thanks :)

SOLVED! GPRS was switched off for my SIM card. Took a couple of calls to O2 (who first blamed Apple, then second person I got through to found the problem...) Why GPRS was switched off when I changed to iPhone I don't know, as it was on for my previous phone. Relieved that my phone is now working as advertised, but kind of pissed off at O2 for FUBAR'ing the initial setup.

O2 is blaming Apple... "I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing such difficulties with your
new iphone. There is currently an issue with Apple and I would advise
you to call their customer Care Helpline for assistance. The number is:
1850946191. You could try the following first as it may help you:

Settings => General => Reset => Reset network settings

If not, please call Apple as we cannot assist you further."

Needless to say, the reset made no difference. I must say that I fail to see how the issue could be with Apple. Anyway, if it's not resolved on Monday the iPhone is going back....

i was onto o2 customer care aswell earlier, the woman I was talking to said that they were the problem regarding the text issue and that they were working it to get it sorted asap, esp with the amount if iphones sold yesterday.

im not in an area with great 3g at the moment but she said that it should be working. ill be back in cork tomorrow, so i can check that then, chances are its a 100% o2 issue. time will tell.

@Chris: the kind folks at O2 Experience Dundrum checked everything re the setup of my SIM card and account, but still no 3G for me :-(. O2 3G comes up as an option when I look at available carriers, but there is no little 3G icon on my phone and I can't connect to the internet when Wi-Fi is turned off.

Not sure where else to post this - but today I got it fixed by speaking to customer care.

Sim card was activated and designated as "Speak Easy" which of course is wrong, Customer Care changed it to "Bill Pay" and asked me to power down and start my iPhone again. I was told that this would fix the issue with being unable to send text messages.

It fixed it. But it also fixed the data problem for me. I am now able to go online and have full use of the iPhone. Very happy with the result and passed my feedback on to O2.

Was a silly mistake - but I'm just glad it is fixed.!

Pat I sent you a DM on twitter with my number if you want to call me to chat about this fix.

No 3G here either (Dublin) since I got the iPhone yesterday. Phone works fine otherwise. Looks like O2 dropped the ball. 3G was my main reason for getting the iPhone....Nothing on their website, of course, although there should be a groveling apology in huge red letters.
