[...] Pat Phelan has been on the warpath since O2 announced its pricing scheme for the iPhone deployment in Ireland on March 14. Alexia and Conor find a few more Paddy Taxes that O2 hoists upon its customers. If you look deep enough it is in much of the telecom industry, though there are a few exceptions like Pat’s own ventures and (for a particular kind of user) MobiPCS back in Hawai‘i. But by and large the major players all treat customers like potential prey instead of valued customers - it’s death by a thousand razors, or Paddy Taxes. [...]

As I said rather angrily <a href="http://www.jazzbiscuit.com/2008/02/29/o2-correctly-target-sucker-demographic-with-irish-iphone-launch/" rel="nofollow">here<a> ... o2 is correctly pricing and targeting this product towards the absolute suckers in Irish society who will lap this up, ridiculous pricing and all.

Given the amount that o2 handed over to get this deal, I very much doubt they're doing it just to screw over Apple and to sell more Nokias.

Lads,

It's all a Nokia play. O2-Ireland holds too much stock of the Nokia N95 and many of the people who were holding their upgrades until the iPhone launch will head over for a reasonably-priced Nokia N95 on O2 upgrade. Some will get the N95-8GB edition in the process. O2 shifts stock while currying favour in Helsinki. And what does the iPhone do for you anyway as an operator if it cannot pull revenue onto the network? The map-happy N95 is a revenue generator, just like the iPhone browser generates revenue. And the O2 data plan makes this point simple and easy to understand at the point of purchase.

I'm enjoying my time with a well-worn Nokia E90 and wonder how many of my friends will pay for bling that rings.

If you really want an iPhone, learn the words "jailbreak" and "bricked" or find a friend that will sort out your cravings. I don't think O2-Ireland is trying to join the Apple fan club.

Disgraceful, yes, surprising no. Our local network operators are nothing if not consistent.
