O2 “Release” Ireland’s first unlimited mobile plan

02 have made the the first positive step in Irish mobile phone usage for a very long period.
This week they have announced “Release”

Release

Make as many calls and send as many SMS as you like and only pay €99 plus VAT @ 21% per month. Its not bad in fact its not bad at all. Its nothing like what’s on offer in the USA but for me its probably the best plan in Ireland for any corporates or even high spending individuals.
Pair this account with an account from my friends at Mobivox or Rebtel and you are sorted for your global calls
Mobivox or Rebtel will give you a local Irish landline number to call for your international calls as part of their service.

Well done to O2 on this, very impressive guys
Only dark spot is the data pricing but I think Bernie may have advice on that.

My advice on data: don’t be afraid to take the 3G SIM out of the O2 black broadband dongle and then use it for data services throughout Ireland. That 3G SIM gives me quality hours of Qik upstreaming services for as little as EUR 17 monthly.

Presumably this will be “subject to reasonable usage”….in other words not limited.

This is a step in the right direction, but still no data included? Still a big ripoff…

It’s certainly a move in the right direction, target at deep-pocketed customers. Still out of reach of most people (including me).

Is it too much to hope that this will become de rigour for Irish mobile operators and that real competition will come into the fray? I wouldn’t mind a competitively-priced heavy usage package, if the unlimited is out of my budget. Monthly price plans are still a bit stingy.

    Pat,
This is a great deal in my opinion for Irish clients. Here in the US Sprint and T-Mobile are the only providers with a deal that includes anything besides just minutes. T-Mobile includes unlimited SMS in their $99 plan and Sprint interestingly enough includes EVERYTHING, as in minutes, SMS, MMS, 3G data, and so on.
I personally have a very old $99 unlimited plan from ATT I have had for about 5 years.
I hope this is a sign of things to come. With more competition and promotions.

Magic Junk is more like it. We signed up for the free trial and had nothing but issues with the poor quality of the service. The problems go even deeper than the lack of a quality phone call, but to the lackluster adherence to customer service. MJ’s customer service is limited to an instant message format. After you become frustrated trying to resolve any issues in that format, you will find there is no recourse to actually talk to a person. They are not allowed to talk to you over the phone. Any request for additional help is completely ignored. If this is how they treat a potential customer, just how poor is the service when you actually commit to them. Be careful, because it is obvious they will not commit to you.
