Skype 2.0 gets 3G calling

photo1
I have written about voice over 3G quite a lot in the past, its also been covered by an amount of people that I really respect in the the telephony community.
I have been “Test driving” it today with 5 by 9 quality calls to Jim Courtney in Canada, James Cotter in Prague, Jeb Brilliant in California and our CTO Alois Widmann in Lichtenstein, it does what it says on the tin to be frank.
There has also been some excellent coverage already There are a couple of negatives though, I find it pretty much unbelievable that an extra fee applies to this since we are already paying for our data add-on but my real worry is battery life, on 5 shorts calls i reduced battery life by 50%, this is on a device that already has a pretty poor battery life so for out and about use this is going to be difficult.
I am roam4free on Skype if you would like to connect.

Is this much different to what 3 offer? It’s definitely interesting, will be even more so when battery life catches up with 3G demands as you rightly point out!

    Hi Pat,

Do you see this as primarily a service for international calls? Data roaming rates may make it expensive to use abroad and for national calls, most iPhone users will already have a generous bundle of GSM minutes with their subscription. Against that, international call tariffs are still extortionate … almost €2 per minute to call a fixed line in Oz on O2-IE!

    John.
