I'm a fan of Skype and get good results with call quality (except when trying to do it over 3G). The Unlimited World subscription is the key for me - means I can be on more calls from home rather than staying behind in the office for them.

If you don't want to be tethered to a pc/mac but still want to let people call you up over your skype account just use the built in call forwarding options. It does require skype credit but 10$ worth covered all my call forwarding to my home phone for almost an entire year ...something worth looking into. (:

I use Skype IM every single day. I do video calls once a week on Skype, but I use my mobile for the phone element and just use Skype for the video - the call quality isn't good enough, in general, to be relied upon for important discussions. Even then, the video drops regularly if one of the callers is on wifi, which is an inconvenience.

I never use skype anymore either. Service is just not up to par. For chat sessions it is good... but don't do that anymore either.

Those are downloads; what % are active users or users at all? In fact recently a client asked me if I had a Skype account and I am trying to dissuade them.

I used to use Skype until I noticed its use of my PC resources slows down the PC considerably. Then I read my EULA again and found I had agreed to my machine being used to route calls.

Now I have uninstalled it. I had a Skype phone device from Doro - uninstalling which will probably need me to reformat my hard disk.

I use VoIP with my BT landline. Crystal clear talk quality and cheap prices. I use GTalk for non-work voice chats while multitasking on the PC.

I find skypein very unreliable, only about 1 in 3 calls actually get to me.

Also most companies now ban the use of skype and other voip products due to security concerns.

i was anti-skype for quite some time. i guess it was just the open source, geeky, hacker, rebel mentality in me that said SIP was the way to go. but as more and more people i know starting using skype it has actually become my most used p2p calling service. and the 3 skype phone is really cool and has the potential to bring more and more people to what i like to call 'toll bypass' telephony; by which i mean call in way that do not involve any termination fees along the way between the carriers.
