Skype sold to Netscape founder
It seems like the rumours that I have been hearing for the last five to six weeks have been confirmed.
Skype has been sold.
Reuters are quoting two sources this morning confirming that the purchaser is a group headed by Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen.
Whilst the price being mentioned is around $1.8 billion I believe that this will contain ongoing payments, Skype is now hitting targets pretty much month on month and with it removed from the mess that is Ebay we should see the return of innovation.
I presume that Skype’s original founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis are part of the group in some format as this would remove the ongoing litigation regarding Skype ip.
I think this is a great deal for the return of innovation at Skype and a great deal in a tough market for Ebay who may know have now have the time and focus to return to its core business.

Glad to hear that you think it’s a positive move because I am ditching Eircom and will be using SKYPE, and some other VOIP and IM services, all the time.
Anne, I did just that some time ago. Best and most cost effective move I ever made.
We use Skype daily as part of our workflow- and also regularly use video calling to catch up with family members overseas. It’s great to hear that its being managed so well.
I use Skype and I love it. The rates are reasonable too. This situation might be the end of Skype. If these so-called investors are greedy (and they usually are), the calling rates for Skype will no doubt rise and people will abandon Skype for something else. Sadly, this might be the beginning of the end for Skype. (my previous post didn’t “hit” for some reason).
Skype helps me a lot with my work. It also helps our family communicate better since some of us are living abroad. Thank you Skype for making life easy.
