So you make long distances calls? go get Rebtel

I notice when I write telecom’s pieces here that they don’t get the amount of comments that they used to.
Maybe its because I write about lots of different stuff now?
People are always asking me who do I recommend for long distance calls
In my opinion there is only one service I use at present on a regular (everyday) basis
Rebtel
Its so simple even my Mom uses it.
So why Rebtel ?
I have 30 to 40 contacts overseas whom I call on a least a weekly basis, Rebtel gives me Dublin numbers for my overseas contacts and it does the rest, I dial the Dublin number, Rebtel’s software does the long distance part, I am only making a local call.
Most of my calls are to the USA and Rebtel gives me that for 1c, from my mobile phone.
Quality is always good and heres the real interesting part, it gives my contacts a number local to them for me, if I decide to allow it my contacts can call me for a local call also, I just pay the portion back to my Irish mobile.
I just saw yesterday that they are doing calls to Nigeria Mobile for under 10c which is quite interesting as this is a very hot phone card destination but I really hope their credit card engine is good on fraud.
I am a huge admirer and friend of their CEO Hjalmar Windbladh but if I wasnt I would still write this post as the service just works all the time.
There is no wifi or messy downloads,no packages which I will never use, just a fantastic reasonably priced service, it works on every handset on the planet and thats real disruption in my opinion.

    thanks for that pat.

been trying to set up something for non-techie friends to reach me (i live abroad).
this has the slickest set up I’ve come across.

if you have any ‘in’ with them. they should email/txt vcards to smooth the addition to address books of permanent numbers.

Nice one Pat, there may not be as many comments, but we’re still reading :P
This is actually perfect, one of my customers was looking for a solution like this, the phone companies just fobbed her off saying there was no way to do it. Good stuff, may use it myself too :)

Rebtel is certainly in the bagain class but there are quite a few others and it is not the cheapest. Have a look at this recent analysis:

But doesn’t Skype do all this at more or less the same rates?

Ah, just realised you’re talking about mobile calls. Will look at this more closely – sounds good.

With Rebtel, my mom calls me for free after 9PM her time and I pay the one cent per minute to hear her 80-something musings. It’s priceless and works a charm with Rebtel.

    wow – good find.

At home (now in the US) we have a MagicJack set up(horrible, horrible website but a very neat product though it could be a bit more reliable) but I love the fact this is is simple to use and for a mobile to mobile call costs me the same as MagicJack or Skype which I have to do from home.

Combine that and Maxroam and a decent worldwide data plan and you can turn the telco world on its head :)
