I’m not surprised T-Mobile Germany had to axe it’s tariffs. Consumers in Germany are much more price-aware than in Ireland. Two petrol stations a few miles apart displaying a price difference of five cents per liter? Won’t happen in Germany!

@uvox I can only imagine It’ll be interesting to see what happens when they (i.e. decent deals on iphones, etc.) do start to take off, i.e. whether the backhaul capacity is even there anyway to support the amount of data!

Shame there isn’t a bigger uptake as it’s doing wonders for Oracle datadbase admins and architects in telco sector with the huge spikes in data associated with the iPhone elsewhere.

Bernie, I think you are right about the signalling here: (1) iPhone shortage just as the hype cycle is ending? (2) Confirmation that new 3G iPhone on the way from CEO of AT&T yesterday?
(3) Price drops in Germany?

These all point to the “harvesting” stage of a product release. I for one am glad I waited. Thanks for the heads-up advice Pat.

Not all greed. They just don’t completely understand the potential benefits of offering additional services (presence, decent data plans, etc.), and the fact that users, i.e. us, will use the features more if they offer them at a decent price/level.

Look at video streaming on 3G. They’ve always scratched their head that people didn’t use it much. It’s an interesting service (I trialled it a lot) but the only time you’re ever going to use it is while bored sitting on a bus or train or something. Where’ s the only place you can’t use those sort of services? On a bus or train or something…..

When it comes to data, they can’t grasp the uses as they’ve had it easy with SMS for so long. And no, that’s not really data

It’s called greed. Unfortunately for them – and iPhone users in this country – the declining economy (see recent Wall Street Journal and FT issues about the economy shrinking) and credit contraction will take care of that.

And if you think iPhone package rates will come down – I’m still waiting for eircom’s broadband pricing to come down.

I was paying 15 dollars p.m. for a super service in San Francisco, but in Dublin….

Unfortuately all the legacy mobile crowds (O2, Voda, etc.) are behind the times over here. They can’t seem to make the leap to including data-type devices (I’m an ex Irish-mobile-telco employee…). Kudos to the American telcos for this at least.
They can’t grasp the fact that they need to offer the handsets with decent monthly plans to get people to use them. Behind the times unfortunately….

Anyone know if Vodafone Irl got any traction with the N95 being subsidised to compete against the iPhone?
