The future of citizen journalism?

Just back from VON.x
An excellent show where video came to the forefront. I got to pitch a few questions at Loic LeMeur regarding his post Is there a future for local startups?
You can watch it here on QIK

For me the highlight was our St Patrick’s Day party where I gave a brief demonstration of our citizen journalism kit.
I was using a Verizon broadband dongle connected to a cradlepoint device synced with a Nokia N95, picture below is thanks to Sheryl.

The Cradlepoint (get it here , tell Kevin I sent you) is a personal hotspot creator which allows me to stream wireless over wifi thus ensuring perfect quality on QIK. All that remains is to find a high quality bluetooth microphone and TV quality streaming is there for the taking.

    You will get better quality sound by wiring a lapel mic into the N95 earbud assembly. We have the tools and have some steady hands dissecting into the first set of cables at the moment.

    Hi Pat,

    Thanks for the tip on how to get WiFi via Verizon on a Nokia N95…

    Bernie - I’ll be very interested in what you are working on for external mics. That’s something I want to improve next.

    I’d like an adapter that would allow me to connect in a shotgun or lav mic…

    Thanks!

    Why not just use a bluetooth headset as a wireless mic that is linked directly to your broadcasting phone?

    So how does this work again.. is the Verizon broadband dongle a GPRS modem?

    How does the cradlepoint have power .. does it use batteries?

    @jason
    the Dongle is a wifi GPRS modem, its powered by Cradlepoint
    Cradlepoint uses batteries, they last 6 hrs and recharge from mains supply
    Cradlepoint has a full admin panel where you can open it fully or restrict it to yourself, you can allow users to login in one by one if you prefer, all users of your mobile hotspot must be authenticated by you.
