Win a Blackberry 9700 from Vodafone

A nice little gift dropped in my hands today, the new Blackberry 9700 from Vodafone Ireland.
I have been watching Vodafone closely lately and have been to a few of their events, I really like their new slogan “Best Performing mobile broadband” so to stick with that I would like the best comment involving the best performance you have seen, whats your favorite performance ever?
Was it that save by Packie Bonner? or was it something else a band or theater?
Best comment gets the phone on Monday.
This is a serious piece of kit so get thinking
This is an Irish phone so unfortunately it must go to an Irish home only.

The winner is Katherine and her best performance was below
numerous sources picked this, congrats Katherine
Ok, I’m rethinking everything and the best performance award from me goes to the Internet and all who sail in her, for coming to my rescue in spectacular fashion last night.

And getting a outstanding result. This is a transcript of a Google IM session from last night:

12:10 AM me: I think there is someone in my house – really – can you call kilkenny gardai. Afraid to speak or go downstairs.
12:11 AM johnhandelaar: on it 999
me: ty
12:12 AM johnhandelaar: gardai on the way
12:13 AM me: k
johnhandelaar: keep me posted pls
12:27 AM me: They got him.
johnhandelaar: woo

Some performance by the Gardai also, they were here within 4 minutes of my first IM, and had they guy (who had just left my house before they arrived) in the back of their car less than 2 minutes later.

And by @handelaar for starting to dial 999 the second he got my message.

    Best Performance?

Tom Waits, The Olympia, March 1981. He held us in the palm of his smoke stained hand. I’d never seen anything like it. I didn’t know I never would again.

I went to see a preview of Superman 2 in Abbey Street after… that was good too…

If it’s a serious piece of Kit, you should give it to Michael Knight.

5 Mins to go Wales winning… Pressure on…
O’Gara steps up with a drop goal to put us ahead… Only for Wales to get a penalty in final min….. And MISS!!! …. U couldn’t make it up!!!

Best performance I’ve ever seen was Riverdance at the Special Olympics Opening Ceremony back in 2003, it was the biggest lineup they’ve ever done(Got a Gunniess World Record for it), still gives me shivers down my spine 7 years on…

Hmmm, not quite along the same lines, but it would have to be @Pink at the O2 last year. When she spun from the ceiling, dripping wet singing ;Glitter in the air’ I became 99% lesbian for the next hour!

Much to my husbands disappointment, it had worn off by the time I got home.

Rolling Stones in Slane, think it was 2007. Really amazing gig, modern bands could learn from the performance how to tear up a set list and venue. Had the crowd jumping from start to finish, their energy and enthusiasm had the entire place fired up. Entirely forgot how old they actually are.

Thrilled to have seen them live and thrilled they put on such an amazing show.

Wow, Ken- talk about digging up a old but brilliant memory – I was there too! You are completely right, never been to a better concert ever.

The icing on it was meeting him the next day in Bewleys in Grafton St. Who knew the guy behind the newspaper was Tom Waits? Incredibly nice guy to boot.

But the best performance I ever saw was actually, believe it or not, Joe Cuddy at the Ballybunnion bachelor of the year circa 1987. No, I am NOT a fan of his music, but boy was this a performance to behold.

Someone I knew was in the competition (long story in itself) and a crowd of us went down for the weekend.

On the night it was sort of like a Rose of Tralee thing – the interviews went on and on and on and on on a very hot night in an overcrowded sweaty hall. When the interval finally and mercifully arrived, Joe Cuddy came on stage to the total and absolute indifference of the crowd, 90% of whom had their backs to him and were heading to the bar.

Ten minutes later he had that entire crowd eating out of his hand, paying full attention and having a ball. By the time he left the stage people were screaming for more.

Never before or since have I seen anyone turn something that looked like so like a losing proposition into so complete a success. It was astonishing.

My friend won the competition. I can’t even remember his performance on the night but I’ve never forgotten Joe Cuddy’s.

Roy Keane against Juventus in 1999. Forgetting what you may think of the man or what you may think of the team his will to get the job done on that particular night was remarkable.

“It was the most emphatic display of selflessness I have seen on a football field. Pounding over every blade of grass, competing if he would rather die of exhaustion than lose, he inspired all around him. I felt it was an honour to be associated with such a player.” – Sir Alex

    Best Performance Ever ??

Its gotta be 18/6/1994 …..Paul McGrath World Cup against Italy. His performance that day was incredible.
He single handedly brought Ireland to victory in the back 4 by keeping the greats of Baggio…Donadoni…. Maldini and Bassero at bay.

Total schmaltz-fest, but it’ll appeal to other dad’s here: the combined performance of my wife and son on bringing him in to the world almost two years ago. On my mind as we’re about to go down that road again in about 3 weeks :)

The cynic in me says that the best performance I’ve seen of late is Pope Benedict pretending like he gives a sh1t…

    The best performance:

When I was 14, my then dog bit a man who was walking up the lane at the side of our house. He bit the man because the man kicked him, which I reckon, in a court of law, would have got him a few doggie chocolate drops and a belly rub, but in the real world, what it got him was a trip to the city – where my parents said he wouldn’t bite anyone because he’d have a garden with fences and walls, and wouldn’t be able to stray outside of that garden.

They kept up the lie until I was about 21 – or at least, until my sister revealed to me that the dog had, in fact, been put down due to his uncontrollable rage.

So the best performance has to go to Mac Cabe Mr and Mac Cabe Mrs, who combined forces to tell me the least believable yarn imaginable, that I still believed. A performance that they then kept up for seven long years.

Best performance has to be my 4 year old when she had an unbelievable tantrum (her first ever in a public place) to the extent that the security guy came over in an attempt to intimidate her into silence and she eye-balled him and screamed ‘I want it’. I didn’t know whether to hug her or strangle her!!
And I would so love a Blackberry :-)
    Just thought of another one
Friend of mine works in Weirs and Blackberry phone were out about 6 months, guy came in looking for a case for his Blackberry, she hadn’t a clue what it was and started looking for a silver ice bucket for him to put his blackberries in! Yes, it is true

i’ve sat at my computer for quite a while now to think of one “best performance” and although it is not that the performance was the best but the memory.
It was ’87/88 around Mayand i was 9 or so. In bed terrified from the screams coming from the sitting room. I crept up with near tears in my eyes of what was happening. I slowly pushed open the sitting room door, shaking in my superted pj’s. My mum standing up screaming, my dad laughing and clapping in the chair. Johnny Logan belting out “HOLD ME NOW”. The eurovision had come back to Ireland. I sat watching the rerun of it over and over with my folks. The real start of the celtic tiger i think……… Brilliant!!!!

Best performance of late can only be Barrack Obama or rather getting himself elected to the most powerful political position on the face of planet earth.

I mean how many people actually appreciate what it took for that man to be elected in the USA. Forget his policies, his politics even and look at the man and the belief that he inspired everytime him uttered those words “Yes we can”.

Be cynical if you want, doubt his sincerity if you want but never doubt the massive change in US politics, global politics even that his election made.

Now if we can only get him to move here! :)

I suppose my favourite performance was when I was in the big family of RENT – never been able to be part of the family of a sports-team, which is similar in many ways (lots of ‘rehearsals’, a sense of dependency).

Plus, being on stage is the single most electrifying experience ever. Hands down.

Another big one, deffo one of my personal favs …

Ireland vs England in Croker during the 2007 six nations … in particular the anthems … i’ve never seen such an emotional rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann. And the way the English anthem was respected on their first visit there was fantastic, a very proud day to be Irish. (nice that we gave them a record beating too)

    Best performer?

Richard Branson, always there for (and being) the brand. Perform in a balloon, a boat, off a tall building, he doesn’t seem to mind but rather thrive on the fact that it’s all for the brand and the team behind him.

There’s way too much to learn from this man.

On the morning of liverpool’s europa league semi-final match I altered the bbc’s sport section with a simple view source, save file as, re-opened the page with the headline “Benitez Sacked” – Followed by a mini paragraph and ending with John Barnes taking over as care-taker manager for that nights game – stay tuned.

Read out the headline to co-worker in the cleanroom and soon had 7 people around the computer, 3 of which were liverpool fans, filled with so much delight and excited, one even raced over to the phone in work to ring his father to tell him the great news. I think it was the best 2 hours of their lives.

The straight face was hard to keep.

The best ever performance I have ever had and most probably ever witness was the Mass of Pope John Paul II in the Phoenix Park in 1979. I was nine years old at the time and thought it was brilliant having to get up out of bed in the middle of the night to travel to the Phoenix Park and we only lived in Tallaght.
A total of two and a half million people attended the seven public venues of his pastoral visit to Ireland, to meet, greet and hear him. The much loved John Paul II had something to say to everyone: laity, priests and religious, the sick, bishops, those of other religions, politicians and especially to young people. Unfortunately I don’t think we will ever have such strong feelings of Faith as we all did that day or wear our Catholicism with such pride.

    BEST FOOTBALL SEASON EVER

Best football season ever was 1998-1999. Sir Alex Ferguson led Manchester United to win his first Champions League Title in 1999 at Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain. It was against Bayern Munich and United trailed Munich 1 nil for most of the match. However, 2 goals in injury time from Sheringham and Solskjaer sealed the Victory.

United’s victory was the culmination of their Treble-winning season, after they had already won the FA Premier League and the FA Cup earlier in the month. Ryan Giggs Goal against Arsenal in the FA Cup Semi Final was probably one the best goals goals ever. Peter Schmeichel’s penalty save from Bergkamp earlier in the game was probably the most important save of all time.

1999 was definitely the best football season ever :-)

    Nice prize Pat :)

I was toying with the idea of saying some serious or funny but such a quality prize deserves a serious answer and I’m not really funny :)

Ever hear of Michael Phelps? Well, he’s not the sharpest tool in the box but he can obviously swim very fast!!

It would seem that everything comes easy to him but he absolutely trains his ass off and he’s had to overcome several obstacles that the general public don’t know of.

Anyway, for me his greatest performance was not when he won all the ‘golds’ in Bejiing 2008 and transformed himself from a sporting superstar to a global superstar. In the Olympics, Phelps won the 100m fly against Milorad Čavić in controversial circumstances with his final stroke. Many people said it was fixed so that he could win the 8 golds. In 2009, Omega (the official timers) said -

” that while Čavić ‘for sure’ touched the wall first, Phelps did it more forcefully, thus registering the time first.”

Together with moving back to Baltimore and being hassled by the media (e.g. caught with a marijuana pipe, http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/06/sports/othersports/06phelps.html?_r=1&ref=sports), Phelps had a crap 2009 and was coming into the Championships under a lot of pressure.

Phelps then got destroyed in one of his top events with his world record smashed by Paul Biedermann. There was a lot of controversy because Phelps was wearing a slower swimsuit (Speedo 2008 model) and he was being made to look an ‘also-ran’.

Towards the end of the championships, there was the hyped-up replay of the 100m fly between Čavić and Phelps. Čavić was wearing the faster suit, was out for revenge and was swimming faster than in 2008. Phelps looked like a mere mortal in his outdated suit. In the semi-finals of the 100m fly, Čavić destroyed the 6-year old world record and was clearly flying (no pun intended :) ).

At the halfway point, Phelps was nowhere, 5th or 6th, a full second behind.

Watch the second-half of the race (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41tu3XG2u4I), Phelps storms back and clearly wins, smashing the world record (from the previous day) and answering his critics as he became the first person to swim 100m fly under 50 seconds, which would be almost world-class for 100m freestyle :)

The reaction of Phelps sums if up!!

On a quiet day in Waterford when I was around 12 my father had a fella working for him called Gerry. His car wouldnt start so Dad decided to give him a hand and push start it, asking for my help. Now Gerry had a Stutter and got very nervous at the whole idea of it but the fact we were on a hill was an advantage. Gerry got in to the driver seat and my father and I pushed it. After serveral attempts….3 or 4…. the car wouldnt start and my Dad, sweating at this stage, started to get angry that he had thought it would work….by this stage we were at the end and pushing up against the hill now.
Dad calls out to Gerry … “FFS Gerry what gear do u have it in?” only for Gerry to reply….
    “IIIIIIITTTS IN NNNNNNNOOOOO GGGGGGGGEAR”

Needless to say it was the best performance Ive seen my Dad give in all the years I know him !!!

My mind’s a blur when it comes to concerts and sports matches, but for customer service Vodafone actually came through with the best performance I’ve ever experienced – really I am NOT just kissing up here.

I had just bought my Palm Treo a few years ago now; ordered online, arrived on time beautiful. When the first bill came in I nearly fainted it was nearly as much as the phone itself! I was confused by the description on the website and believed that the phone came under MyVodafone, but it didn’t. When I rang customer service, because it was a large amount, they asked that I write to the manager explaining and they were brilliant about crediting the amount and apologising about the misleading information on the website.

As someone that used to be in Customer Service, I’m pretty tough about it and this is one time that really stands out for me — especially because so many businesses have such poor performance in this area!

    Best performance ever…..easy

Bono’s performance at Live Aid in 1985.

Specifically when they performed Bad and about half way through, Bono heads down to the crowd. The Edge and Adam are looking at each other thinking…”what the feck is he up to now”. Following a bit of commotion with the security staff a girl is pulled out of the crowd and dances with Bono.

Bono’s performace impressed me for a number of reasons. I was 10 years old when this happened and I saw it live, his performance and passion in the song gave me goose bumps and sparked my interest in music for the first time.

When I got older and looked back on the performace with slightly more mature eyes, I realised Bono’s was being a smart cookie here, he did’nt just jump out to the crowd for no good reason, he knew the world was watching and that he had an oppertunity to do something to stand out on a day filled with the biggest names in music, and it worked ! Soon after they went from being a reasonibly well know band in the UK and Ireland, to being the number 1 band in the world, appearing on the cover of Time as “rocks hottest ticket”.

It was some what of a lesson that has served me well in my career, never miss an oppertunity to stand out of the crowd…but make sure your standing out for the right reasons ;0)

It was an impressive performace on a numebr of levels and even to this day when ever a hear or see a performance of that song, I get goosebumps.

Best performance was undoubtedly by Adam Carroll and Team Ireland A1GP team at Brands Hatch last year, when they clinched the A1GP world championship in commanding style.

Together they dominated the whole weekend through qualifying, a win in the sprint race and another win in the feature race.
The car was same as the rest of the cars on the grid, but Team Ireland gave Adam a car that was extremely competitive. He still had to drive it and cope with the pressure, of being a “championship contender”, and he did this admirably.
The team and driver were untouchable all weekend and deservedly lifted the trophy and championship at the end of the day.
A memorable day for all concerned but I don’t need to tell you that as you saw it with your own eyes too.

    The best performance…

Foo Fighters & NIN at Marlay Park a few years back.
I was absolutely blown away with the Foo’s opening song; Everlong. After that I spent the remainder of the concert with one arm around the guy in front of me so I didn’t fall back into a pile of mud and stinky men!

I was right at the front, I could see everything, hear everything. I was completely squashed, and holding on for dear life! Very exciting..amazingly upbeat and wonderfully energetic crowd. Such an atmosphere. What an amazing performance.

My Best Performance would have to be when i went to the Michael Jackson’s last concert (before he got sick & died) in America. It was for my confirmation & was the most brilliant night of my life!

When i went to see Michael Jacksons last ever concert in America for my confirmation before we even knew he was going to get sick and die. It was so sad when we heard.

The best performance by far, was the Flaming Lips Boom Box Experiment, at Bimbo’s 365 Club in San Francisco, in 1997, as part of the Noise Pop Festival.

The Flaming Lips created some software which let them compose music with many (50?) tracks, and each track to a different cassette. When we showed up, they handed out 50 corresponding boomboxes, and Mark Coyne “conducted” the audience. When he gestured to your section of the audience, you were to press play (or pause) on your boombox.

The resulting sounds were absolutely triumphant. Simultaneously complex yet low-fi, rich, towering, quite unlike anything I’ve heard before or since. The entire audience was completely entranced — no one was expecting /that/.

I have often wished I could recapture the experience, or listen to a recording of it in hopes of remembering more precisely how it felt to hear so many voices at once, yet in a such composed way. Breathtaking, spine-tingling … I’ve seen many amazing performances before and since, but that is the one I wouldn’t trade for the rest.

Has to be my 4 yr old nieces first ballet show, weeks of work went into it and on the big night it started off well, until we caught her eye… From then on all she wanted to do was wave to us, her poor classmates had to push her along as her teacher got more and more worked up :)
luckily we have it all on tape, she is now 12 and it’s great to bring her back to earth now and then when she starts to act like a prima Donna :)

World Cup 2010 Qualifying Play-Off. The second leg between Ireland and France (aka The one where Henry caught the ball). Underdogs going into the match, the Irish team played their hearts out and did us proud. Kevin Kilbane played one of the best passes ever in a green shirt to set up Duff’s assist to Robbie Keane. It was a great goal and a great performance by Ireland. Pity about the result.

    Best Performance = N.E.R.D @ Lovebox Marlay Park 2008
    INSANE
Only knew a few of their songs but have never experienced anything like it. Even if you’re not into that kind of music I would definitely tell anyone to go just for the atmosphere! To top it all off they pulled a group of guys up for a song and then a group of girls (including me). Just amazing!
